Tim Chocklett of Vinton Collects Championship Flight Prize

3 More Seniors Collect their Tickets to National Finals with Wins at The Manor Resort

Farmville, VA

July 10, 2012

The Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour held its 2nd MAJOR Event of the season today at The Manor Resort. Automatic qualification to the National Finals was up for grabs to all flight winners as well as double points to all participants. Under overcast skies, a brief shower, and cooler temperatures; the action was fierce in all 4 flights. The largest margin of victory in any of the flights was 2 strokes; with 2 of the flights being decided by a single stroke.

In the Championship Flight it was Tim Chocklett of Vinton who picked up his ticket by winning his 2nd tournament of the season with a solid round of 75. 2 strokes back in 2nd place was Barry Shea of Danville who shot a 77.

Fellow Lynchburg golfers Frankie Smith Sr. and Jim Gaddy continued their season long battle for first place in the A Flight. Gaddy, who is narrowly hanging on to the flights points lead having won 2 previous tournaments this season; once again came up 1 stroke short in the qualification event recording a 79. In both Majors the single stroke victories have gone to Smith who is holding on tightly to his National qualification with the 2 MAJOR titles in hand. Smith used a par on the 10th hole coming down the stretch as Gaddy bogied to hang on for the win with his 78.

In B Flight action Sam Moser of South Boston punched his ticket also with his best round in 7 starts using 2 birdies to card a 76. Moser’s prior best finish had been in the last tournament in which he recorded an 85. Finishing 2nd with a 78 was Raymond Rice of Hurt; who also recorded his best round of the season . Rice had already received a qualification as a prior winner in the 1st MAJOR.

Going into today’s event Tim Stirling of Huddleston trailed in the C Flight points standings by a mire 260 points. Stirling used his drive for the points lead to propel him to his 4th victory of the season. Stirling’s 87 was good enough to earn him not only the flights point standings lead but also the qualification berth. Walt Renton of Crossville,Tenn. once again came in secord place carding a 88. It was the traveling Renton’s 3rd tournament; the first 2 finishes being sudden death playoffs for 1st place ties all of which he came up a stroke short of winning.
