Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateurs Compete in final Major of the season at Keswick

Keswick, VA

October 9, 2012

The Keswick Club; which was built in 1948 by Scottish immigrant Fred Findlay and redesigned by the Arnold Palmer Golf Course Design Company in 1992; was the site for Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tours final MAJOR of the season. The tournament brought players from West Virginia, Tennessee, and all across the state of Virginia to experience the beauty of the venue. It was also the last opportunity for the Tour members to win automatic qualification to the National Championship and receive double points in their flight point standings. Tour Director Kenny Powell said of the course,” I have played a lot of courses but none much more beautiful or with greens any more challenging than these.” From the Magnificence of the Resort Hotel and Clubhouse , the beauty of the natural scenery of the course and grounds, and the friendly courteous professional staff this was truly a First Class experience.

The Championship Flight saw Keith Myers from Roanoke collect his 6th win of the season ; and 2nd in a row by carding a 77 on the very difficult tract. Three strokes behind was 2011 National Champion Jim Gallagher from Yorktown, Terry Towler from Dillwyn, Tim Chocklett from Roanoke, and Frankie Smith Sr. from Lynchburg; all tied for 2nd place with 80’s. This 2nd place finish was also Frankie Smiths first tournament in Championship Flight after being promoted up from the A Flight following his win last tournament at Chatmoss.

In the A Flight Jim Gaddy from Lynchburg ; who had been edged out by only a stroke or two in each of the other 3 MAJORS ; used a strong finishing surge to pull away from his competitors. Gaddy picked up 3 birdies on his final 5 holes in route to his 5th victory of the season and 1st MAJOR win.  Gaddy’s 74 was also the low round of the tournament. In 2nd place with an 83 was Dick Douthat from Forest.

Bill Knarr from Verona carded 1 birdie in his round of 86 in the B Flight to give him his 1st win of the season. In recent weeks Bill has been consistently improving. Two strokes behind at 88 were Wayne Crupi from Alexandria and Charlie Snipes from Keswick ; each of which had birdies today also.

The C Flight also saw a new face on the Winners platform with Robbie Jones from Chesapeake picking up his 1st win of the season with his 94. In 2nd place for the 6th time this season in 6 tournaments entered; and again by a single stroke was Walt Renton from Crossville, Tennessee with a 95.

With only 2 tournaments left in the season the next tournament is Tuesday October 16 at Pulaski Country Club with the final tournament being Tuesday October 30 at Hunting Hills.

Closest to the Pin winners were :

Danny Wright from Big Island on hole #6

Dick Douthat from Forest on hole # 16
