Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

I am very pleased to announce the addition of Planet Fitness to our list of Tour Sponsors. The overall points Champion for our upcoming season will receive a Black Card Membership for 1 year to Planet Fitness. What a Great way to keep toned up for your peak performance.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #237 The one-day stroke play Annual Harvest Moon Hoot & Holler Championship is under way. It is a sunny but gusty/windy day. Billy-Bob finds his drive on the 4th has found one of the fairway bunkers. Unfortunately, a small branch had apparently broken off from a nearby fir tree, ended up in the bunker and Billy-B’s ball has rolled underneath the branch. Billy-Bob removes the branch from the bunker but in the process also moves his ball. Dagnabbit!Recognizing he may have screwed up, Billy-Bob replaces the ball. Billy-B then plays out of the bunker into the rough, hits again onto the green and 1-putts.He informs his marker that when he removed the broken fir limb from the bunker his ball moved, but he replaced the ball. What is Billy-Bob’s score for the 4th hole? A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 7

Answer C. BB took four strokes plus two penalty strokes for moving a loose impediment in a hazard (13-4). A single act caused two Rules to be breached: R13-4 and R18-2a, player moving ball in play. Because it was a single act by the player, we only apply the single 2-stroke penalty. If Billy-B had not replace his ball, he would have also played from a wrong place which would earn him a second 2-stoke penalty (General Penalty for R18).

2013 Nationals:

PINEHURST — Three Virginians and a Pennsylvanian living in Florida took home the hardware in the annual Senior Amateur Golf Tour Championship played on four Pinehurst courses Nov. 12-13.Ron Sullins of Yorktown Va., shot a 36-hole score of 151 to capture the Championship Flight hardware, but it took a playoff to get the job done.Brian Layne, also of Yorktown, simply ran away and hid from the field in Flight A, winning by nine strokes.Lester Brightbill, the Pennsylvanian now living in The Villages in Florida, won Flight B by three shots and David Davis of Martinsville, Va., claimed a two-stroke win in Flight C.The championship was played on National Golf Club, Dormie Club, Legacy Golf Links and Seven Lakes Country Club.

Sullins, who is 60, retired from the military and now working for a private security firm, was making his fourth appearance in the national championship and came to Pinehurst feeling good about his game."I came here playing well and hoping to be in the running,” he said after posting rounds of 75 at Legacy and 76 at Seven Lakes and clinching the Championship Flight title with a par on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff."I drove the ball well both days and that was the key for me; keeping it in the fairway,” Sullins said. “I’ve been playing recreational golf for 42 years and play about three times a week, but this was a lot bigger than anything else I’ve ever won. It’s a good feeling.

"Layne was somewhat more surprised with his A Flight win, especially by the margin. He shot 74 at Seven Lakes and 76 at Legacy."I didn’t come here with a lot of confidence,” he said. “I was playing horribly. But I made the decision to cut down on my swing and it paid off. It was just something I did on my own. I was just too ‘handsy’.I just tried to keep from making any big mistakes and the key was driving and putting well. And I also had two chip-in birdies today.”This was the second Tour Championship title for Layne, who won the B Flight in the Regular Tour Championship in 2008, despite having taken up the game only eight years ago."The first one was nice, but I like this one better,” he said.

Brightbill, 65, a retired Pennsylvania state policeman, took up the game after leaving the military but had never tasted victory on this level. His B Flight victory came by three strokes."I was hitting it straight and my putting came along today,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve ever won anything on a national level.

Davis, a 63-year-old playing in only his second Tour Championship, credited an injury for his win in C Flight."I’ve never won anything in golf before,” he said. “And the key for me was a pulled muscle in my back that kept me from swinging too hard."Seriously, it was so painful that I was close to withdrawing and going home.”But the 63-year-old retired telephone company employee stuck it out and the result was a two-stroke victory as he shot rounds of 83-93—176."Usually, I just grip it and rip it,” he said, “but with the pulled muscle, I played conservatively and it paid off.”Like the other champions, Davis enjoys more than just competition on the Amateur Tour."I really enjoy the fellowship with the other players,” he said. “This is by far the best tour I’ve ever played on."

The team Cup was won by Charlotte with a 2 day total of 1315 followed closely by Raleigh/Pinehurst at 1335 then the Triad tour and Piedmont, VA.
