Having a Hard Time Closing  a Great Round?

"Improve Your Golf Mental Toughness"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

PINEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

PLAYOFFS HIGHLIGHT SENIOR TOUR MAJOR EVENT AT PINEWOOD CC

Asheboro, NC

June 26, 2014

The Third Major Championship of the 2014 Senior Amateur Golf Tour season was contested at Pinewood Country Club. Very close scores were the norm for victory in three of the four flights competing.

It doesn't get any closer than a tie which was the case in both the B and Championship Flights. Burlington's Dickie Isley and Allen Kayler of Winston-Salem finished their rounds with identical 82s in the B Flight. They headed out to hole # 10, a 362 yard, par-4 for a sudden death shootout. Isley blasted his drive around 260 yards off the tee. He then smoothly hit a wedge into birdie range and calmly made the putt. Kayler forced Isley to make that putt with a par of his own, but it was not quite enough. It was Isley's first win of the season.

He, like the other 3 flight winners today, assured themselves of an invitation to the year-ending National Championship event by virtue of their wins in today's Major Championship. Those National Finals are to be held in Pinehurst in November.

Another Tour member who earned that right was Huntington, WV's Steve Fox. His "playoff" with Burlington's Craig Cathey after both shot 73s was considerably less dramatic than Isley's win.

Due to the fact that the temperatures rose into the mid 90s through most of the day, and everyone was pretty much worn out by the end of their round, Fox and Cathey agreed to decide the "playoff" by a coin flip.

Fox's luck held out - he called "heads" and "heads" it was.

Tour veteran Randy Bunn of Zebulon, no stranger to the winner's circle during his Tour career, equaled the winning scores of Fox and Cathey with his A Flight victory. His 73 was 1 stoke clear of Greensboro's Randy Coppedge for top honors. "When Randy's on he's tough to beat", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck,"and he's one of the fastest players we've got".

In the C Flight Pinehurst's John Henely made it two wins in a row, repeating his effort from last week at Stoney Creek by firing an 82. He was 3 shots clear of Sophia's Dennis Bryant. "After 10 consecutive efforts in the 90s, John has really turned it around his last 4 events", noted Hallenbeck.

The Senior Tour will take a two week hiatus and return to play at Greensboro Country Club - The Farm Course on July 17.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to  the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access.  Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #257

Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow stakes.  He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard.

He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a steep slope.  After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time.  Nate then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water.

Nate moves  back about four yards into the fairway, keeping the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft turf.  When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the flag.

So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2 yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white line.  Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops.  This time the ball remains where it was dropped.  He hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to complete the play of the hole.

In stroke play, how many penalty strokes did Nate just incur?

A. 4

B. 6

C. 7

D. 9

===============================================

Answer:

C. 7

1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2 penalty strokes.

2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same Rule, related acts, single penalty.  This could also be construed as testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered related acts and single breach.  See Decision 1-4/12)

3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = 1 penalty stroke.

4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded = 2 penalty strokes.  When he first dropped the ball, it was in play.  He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of the relief procedure from R26-1.  He is taking relief for an embedded ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come up.   When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place (R20-7).  Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25.

I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use the DZ as intended.  Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than part of the area through the green.  When he dropped the ball in this area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2.  Thus when the ball rolled closer to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c).  So what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was probably doing it for the wrong reason.

If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course.  The special dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.)

Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
