Bentwinds Country Club

10:00 AM Shotgun

Bentwinds Country Club

Bentwinds Country Club, one of Tom Hunter’s only golf courses was designed and shaped through farm lands, tall pines, oaks and is a Tour member favorite.

Recently renovated, Kris Spence took what was a great base to make Bentwinds one of Central North Carolina’s finest golf courses. Strategic bunker placement and wonderfully defined tiff sport bermudagrass fairways creates challenging shot angles to our A-1 A-4 bentgrass greens.

The Opening Nine

The front nine consist of two long par 5's, five skillfully crafted par 4's and two demanding par 3's. Tour member will encounter narrow fairways, sloping greens, and a variety of hazards during the tournament.

The Back Nine

The back nine has two par 5's, both being risk-reward holes, giving you either an eagle or maybe a bogey. There are five par 4's which will test tour member's patience and skills with a variety of different clubs. The par 3's are short but the sloping greens demand accuracy and putting finesse.

Don't miss playing this course.

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

THE CHALLENGE

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

THE CHALLENGE PROVES JUST THAT FOR SENIOR TOUR

Graham, NC
April 23, 2015

While the scores of the flight winners were impressive, The majority of Senior Amateur Golf Tour members who participated in the tour event at The Challenge Golf Club posted scores higher than what would be normally expected.

While Tour members were exposed to conditions they haven't experienced yet this season - sunny skies with moderate temperatures - gusty winds made scoring a little more difficult.

Dan Anthony of Thomasville led the Championship Flight with a 77, one stroke clear of Whispering Pines' Ron Hockensmith. They were the only 2 flight members to break 80.

The A Flight saw 5 players break the 80 mark, led by Fuquay-Varina's Randy Fuquay with a 76. He was 2 shots ahead of a trio of golfers - Zebulon's Randy Bunn, Knightdale's Mike Johnson and John East of Rockingham.

The B Flight, which played from slightly shorter tees than their Championship and A counterparts, also boasted 3 players in the 70s. Tour rookie Ralph Reed continued his stellar play in this early season with a 76. The Sanford resident has been a force in every event in which he's played. "I see Ralph moving up to A Flight status very soon" said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
Pinehurst's Larry Ringen was B Flight runner-up with a 78.

Morrisville's Warren Henderson, playing in his first event of the 2015 season, posted an 83 for the top spot in the C Flight. He was 2 strokes ahead of Durham's Brian Costine.

The Senior Tour will next play at Bentwinds Country Club In Fuquay-Varina on April 30. There are openings available for that event.

Where Will You Be in the 2015 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2015.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #300

Laurie is about to play her ball off the 3rd tee. Just a she starts her down swing, she is distracted by the ringing cell phone of another player in her foursome. She completes her swing but misses the ball, which is not surprising since the ringtone was the opening riff from Van Halen’s Panama. After the ladies all stop dancing and laughing, the owner of the cell phone apologizes and says she can “take that over”. Laurie lifts her ball and re-tees it on the far side of the teeing ground. From the following four choices, pick all of the correct statements.

A. Laurie’s next stroke will be her first. Under the principle of equity, her first swing does not count as a stroke.

B. Laurie’s next stroke will be her second. Distractions are a natural part of the game.

C. If Laurie plays her next stroke from the far side of the teeing ground, she will be playing under Rule 27-1, and incurs the penalty of stroke and distance, playing her third but there is no additional penalty for moving her ball in play.

D. When Laurie missed her ball it then became her ball in play and the stroke counted. When she lifted and moved her ball, she breached Rule 18-2a, incurred a one stroke penalty and was required to replace the ball on the tee in its original location. If she correctly moves her ball back to its original location, her next stroke will be her third.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answers

A. False.

B. False.

C. True. Since her ball is in play, if she lifts and moves it elsewhere on the teeing ground, she breached Rule 18-2a for having moved her ball in play. She is required to replace it. If she does not replace it and proceeds to play her ball from elsewhere on the teeing ground, you might at first be inclined to think she should receive the General Penalty for Rule 18, two strokes. But this is the teeing ground. And, if you recall when proceeding under stroke and distance (R27-1), the player is allowed to tee the ball anywhere on the teeing ground. Thus, we score this: first stroke missed, penalty under R27-1, third stroke from the teeing ground. (See D18-2a/1 and D18-2a/2). This ruling is unique to the teeing ground and ends up saving her a stroke by avoiding the general penalty for R18.

D. True. As you should now see, since her ball is in play after her first stroke, the best course of action is to grin and bear it, but do not touch the ball. If after the whiff it stays teed up, fine, play it from there. If it happens to fall off the tee after missing it, play it from its spot on the ground. Anything else will incur a penalty stroke. As stated in answer B, distractions are a natural part of the game. Leave the ball be and get ready to play your second stroke.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
