Bryan Park 2 Day Tournament

10:00 AM Shotgun/Daily

There’s not much to say about this venue – they are great courses to play and you will play each next week.

The Champions Course opened in 1990 by the legendary Rees Jones. Therefore be warned, it can become a real skill challenge! It is a big time course that is always looked at and most times selected for competitive rounds to separate the real golfer from the pretenders.

When you play this course on Thursday you will be able to match your card against many of the collegiate and future PGA stars as well as The US Amateurs.

This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend.

  • Runner up best new public course in the country Golf Digest 1990.
  • One of the best New Public Courses in The Country - Top 10 You Can Play - Golf 1991.
  • Four star rating and honored with the distinction of a GREAT VALUE - Golf Digest's Places to Play 1994-95, 1996-97
  • Noted as one of the few public courses worthy to host the U.S. Open - Golf World 1992
  • One of the top 12 golf courses in North Carolina - Tee Time Golf 1995
  • "Best In State" Rankings - Golf Digest 1995-96, 1997-98
  • Listed in "America's 500 Best Places You Can Play" - Golf Digest 1996.
  • (A ranking of the 10 best public and resort courses in all 50 states, the Champions ranked third in North Carolina.)
  • Listed in "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play" as the #12 best affordable golf course in the country - Golf Digest 1996.

The Players Course opened in 1974. Originally designed by George Cobb, the course was later modified by Rees Jones.

Do not be lulled asleep by Bryan Park Players Course. Be warned, the Players Course will get you if you fail to execute any shot correctly on Wednesday.

Course Notes

  • 18 hole championship layout featuring 79 bunkers and eight ponds/lakes.
  • Bryan Park was voted Best Golf Course in the Reader's Choice -- Tops In The Triad contest by the Greensboro News and Record
  • Listed in the Middle Atlantic's 100 Best Places To Place -- Washington Golf Monthly 1997, 1998
  • Listed in 1998-99 Places To Play, three and a half rating -- Golf Digest 1998, 1999, 2000

The quick review: Bent grass Greens and Bermuda Fairways and other accolades too many to mention - as an example the site of the 2010 US Amateur Publinks Tournament.

This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend.

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

SOUTHERN PINES REVIEW

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

LOW SCORES, ACE IN SENIOR TOUR EVENT

Southern Pines, NC
June 4, 2015

You had to "bring it" today at Southern Pines Country Club if you planned on being atop the leaderboard in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event. As a matter of fact, on one hole you had to be perfect just to tie the best effort.

That hole was the 176 yard, par 3, 9th hole, where Championship Flight participant Greg Mabe of High Point hit a 4-iron for his 2nd career "ace". "The ball was dead on-line right from the club", stated playing partner Howard Nemenz of Winston-Salem. "One hop and it 'slam dunked' into the hole".

Mabe tied for 6th in the flight which was topped by Cary's Johnny Adams with a 73. Joey Moffitt of High Point and Sanford's Craig Sturdivant were both 1 stroke back.

When it comes to active Tour veterans, no one has been around longer on the Central Carolina (formerly Raleigh & Triad) Tour than Pinehurst's William Hiner. The 17-year member posted a 72 to earn the top spot in the A Flight. "72 used to be an everyday thing for Bill", noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck, "but this was one of his best efforts in quite awhile. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy". Hiner needed every putt that dropped, edging Raleigh's James Jones and Wilson Shelton of Madison by a single shot.

The score went even lower in the B Flight competition as Pinehurst's Larry Ringen fired a 71 for an 8-shot margin over his nearest competitors. A multiple winner "on-Tour" this season, Ringen could possibly have his Tour handicap fall into A Flight range with this effort.

Not to be outdone, Steve Shows of Winston-Salem posted his best score of the year in the C Flight with an even 80. Once again the race was close as Raleigh's John Hall finished 2 shots back with an 82.

"Nice weather and a course that was in good shape had a positive effect on scoring and a lot of our guys took full advantage of the conditions to go low. Quite a few with their best scoring efforts of the year", noted Hallenbeck.

Next week the Senior Amateur Tour will have it's annual 2-day event at Bryan Park in Greensboro on Wednesday 6/10 and Thursday 6/11. There are a limited number of open spots available for that tournament.

Where Will You Be in the 2015 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2015.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #306

Replace or play as it lies?

1. Ball on the putting green, ball marker in place and a gust of wind moves the ball.

A. Replace. B. Ball must be played as it lies.

2. Your ball is on the putting green, the wind blows a Magnolia leaf which hits and moves your ball in play.

A. Replace. B. Ball must be played as it lies.

Penalty or no penalty?

1. Your ball is on the green when you address the ball, the ball moves but clearly, your putter head never touched it.

A. Penalty. B. No penalty.

2. Your ball is perched on a sloped section of the putting green. You approach the ball, take your stance and before you can set your putter down behind the ball, the ball moves, rolls down the hill nearly into the hole. You decide to putt the ball from this new position.

A. Penalty. B. No Penalty.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answers

Replace or play as it lies?

1. B, played as it lies. Wind is not an outside agency (see Def: Outside Agency).

2. A, must replace the ball. A leaf is deemed an outside agency when it is propelled by the wind. Same would apply to any obstruction (cup, plastic bag, etc.) While wind, by itself, is not an outside agency, the ball moved as a result of being struck by an object which is an outside agency. It does not matter that wind propelled the leaf. See Decisions 18-1/6 and 18-1/7.

Penalty or no penalty?

1. A, penalty. Sorry, once you address the ball and it moves, unless the movement is directly attributable (known or virtually certain) to some outside influence, the player is deemed the cause. Rule 18-2b.

2. B. No penalty. As the player had not yet “addressed” the ball, he is not deemed to be the cause of the ball moving unless there were some direct evidence to suggest otherwise. Thus when he played the ball from this new, at rest position, he did so in accordance with the Rules.

Remember, with the Rules revision of 2012, a player has “addressed the ball” when he grounds his club immediately in front or immediately behind the ball. Whether he has or has not taken his stance is no longer associated with this definition.

Unless some inadvertent contact were made, when a ball is on the putting green, it would be most improbable to ever penalize a player for moving his ball as a result of him taking his stance. On the tour, players are occasionally penalized a stroke under R18-2a when taking their stance beneath trees or on pine straw. Frequently, sticks laying hidden beneath the straw can effect a ball when the player steps nearby.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
