Carolina Trace Country Club - Creek Course

10:00 AM Shotgun

The course architect of Carolina Trace is Robert Trent Jones Sr. and if you are a student of the game, you should know Robert Trent Jones portfolio of courses.

Jones, Sr. worked with golf legend Bobby Jones on the Peachtree course in Atlanta and again on the Augusta National course, the home of the Masters. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. became a national celebrity with his complete re-design of the Oakland Hills South course for the U.S. Open Tournament in 1951.

He immediately became the "Open Doctor" and in quick succession re-designed such major venues as Baltusrol-Lower course, Olympic-Lake course, Southern Hills, Oak Hill and Congressional Country Club.During his career, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed or re-designed nearly 500 courses in at least 40 states in the U.S. and 35 countries around the world.

At Carolina Trace Country Club, members are fortunate to have two courses designed by such a world renowned architect. The Lake Course winds around the 315-acre Lake Trace with captivating views where maintaining focus on your game can be difficult "but fall asleep at your peril and potentially higher scores".

The course you will be playing at this private community is the Creek Course, which opened for play in 1979. The Creek Course features dramatic elevation changes, rolling terrain, and a “Creek” interspersed among the 18 holes. The narrow fairways are Bermuda grass with the greens featuring Crenshaw Bent grass.

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

CHAPEL RIDGE TOURNAMENT REVIEW

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

Rick LaFata began the season in the A Flight but after winning a March event at Tobacco Road, he quickly earned a promotion to the Championship division. He posted several top-five finishes in the most-competitive division of the Senior Amateur Tour but didn’t have a win until he fired a 2-under-par 70 at the Golf Club at Chapel Ridge on July 16.

The Raleigh resident had a solid round that included hitting 13 greens in regulation on his way to a one-shot win over James Dill of Cary.

Three of LaFata’s four birdies came on front nine. After he wedged to three feet on the par-5 fifth, he drilled a 6-iron to within four feet at the par-3 sixth. Two holes later, on the par-3 eighth, he missed the green only to keep his momentum going with a chip-in birdie.

His final birdie came on the par-5 11th hole where his eagle putt was off the mark but left him with an easy tap-in.

LaFata wasn’t the only player to score a breakthrough win at Chapel Ridge.

Chuck Taubersmith of Pinehurst rolled in five birdies on his way to a 2-under-par 70 to win the A Flight. He had four short birdie putts and capped his round with a 25-footer at the par-5 fifth that clinched his three-shot win with his lowest tour round of the year.

Michael Mullins of Raleigh captured the B Flight with what he called his lowest round in many years. His 73 was a five shots clear of the second-place finisher. He had just two birdies on his steady scorecard – one of those a lengthy putt from off the green at the par-4 fourth.

Steve High of Rocky Mount completed the winners’ list with one of the lowest C Flight scores ever. High went low with a 77 and a two-shot win over Bob Brown of Whitsett. He notched three birdies while claiming his first win of the year.

Tour director Bruce Hallenbeck congratulated the 102-player field for their low scoring while warning that the tour handicap calculator tells no lies. Players whose scores merit a promotion to a higher flight will tee it up against a little stiffer competition when the tour resumes in Sanford next Thursday.

Carolina Trace’s Creek Course is the venue.

Where Will You Be in the 2015 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to  the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access.  Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2015.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #309

In stroke play, Mary, a right-handed player, has hit her ball left towards the OB line. She properly plays a provisional ball. When she arrives at her ball she finds the following situation:

Mary finds that the stake which defines out of bounds in this area has somehow been displaced from the hole in which it normally would be anchored. The OB line for this hole is determined by stakes only, no painted lines are visible.

The normal position of the stake is obvious as there is a square hole for the stake nearby. Mary is unsure whether her ball is in or out of bounds with reference to the boundary stakes.

If it is deemed inbounds she is not sure if she can move the stake or not since where it currently lays on the ground would interfere with her stroke. If she is permitted to move the stake, she is not sure if she has to replace the stake in its proper hole.

She recognizes as obvious, if she does replace the stake, it would interfere with her upcoming stroke.

Which is the single correct statement that could apply to this situation?

A. A displaced or misplaced stake is simply bad luck and her ball is deemed out of bounds as a result of its being beyond the OB stakes.

B. Based upon the known proper position for the OB stake, Mary’s ball is in bounds; however, because of the restrictions associated with OB stakes, she must not move or replace the OB stake or else she would be penalized two strokes under R13-2.

C. Mary may move the OB stake (as it no longer defines OB it is deemed a moveable obstruction); however, she must replace the stake in its known proper hole and deal with the situation according to the Rules.

D. Because there are several uncertainties, Mary could declare her intention to play two balls under R3-3: her original as it lies, moving the stake out of the way, and her provisional ball in the fairway as the second. Before playing either ball, she should designate which ball she would like to count for her score.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:   D.

Each of A, B and C have incorrect information.

If found displaced, laying on the ground, the OB stake is deemed a movable obstruction. She may replace the stake in its proper hole, but is under no obligation to do so. She may simply play the ball as it lies, moving the stake out of the way. Provided she declared her original ball the one she wanted to count for score, that ball would be used to determine her score for the hole.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
