Carolina Trace Country Club (Creek)

2016 Central Carolina Senior Tour

Carolina Trace Country Club (Creek)

The second eighteen at this North Carolina private golf community is the Creek Course, which opened for play in 1979. The Creek Course features dramatic elevation changes, rolling terrain, and a meandering creek interspersed among the 18 holes. The narrow fairways are Bermuda grass with the greens featuring Crenshaw Bent grass.

The Creek Course winds through the beautiful community of Carolina Trace with many shot-making challenges, coupled with an enjoyable golfing experience.

The 3rd hole of the Creek Course was the only hole in North Carolina to be included in Golf Course Home Magazine's Dream Residential 18 Golf Holes. Other notable holes on the Creek Course are the 4th, 15th and 16th holes, which require careful navigation of the streams and ponds, while the 18th green sits at one of the most dramatic junctures on the property - a slice of land surrounded on three sides by water. With its changing elevations, Creek can feel more like a mountain course in places, adding to the diversity of the Carolina Trace golf community.

Bring your 'A' Game and you have a chance to be in the money.

BRYAN PARK

FLIGHT WINNERS

===============================================================

Once again overtime was required to determine a winner of theChampionship Flight on the Bryan Park Players course. Dan Anthony and Grant Hoffman tied at 74 in regulation play and went back to the course for a showdown. After identical pars on the first extra hole, Anthony finished the playoff on the second hole with a birdie 2 on the 174 yard par 3. Jim Blaylock finished third one stroke back.

In the A flight 5 players shot under par on the front 9 holes, butRon Brady posted a 35/37 even par 72 to take first place. Chuck Smith, Cecil Lockley, Chuck Taubersmith, and Bob Dail were all 2 strokes back at 74.

The B flight had a great round turned in by Ron Tapscott of 36/38-74 to finish six shots ahead of six players. Richard Hartley, Parker Whitt, Dick Kuehl, Mike Wallace, Bob Brown, and Dick Schuler all carded an 80.

In the C flightLewis Burgman had back to back birdies on holes 10 and 11. And took full advantage of his home course knowledge and put an 81 up on the board and cruised to a three stroke victory. Mike Hawkins tried hard shooting an 84 but was no match for Burgman today. Brian Costine came up one shot short of Hawkins for third while Marty Young finished fourth. Three other players broke the 90 barrier. Phil Matthews with an 88, Dan Whalen and Lee Smith posting 89.

Next Tournament at Carolina Trace (Creek Course).

Where Will You Be in the 2016 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to  the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access.  Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2016.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titledWhat's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #353

On the par four 4th hole, Derrick lies two just left of the green. Unfortunately, he has short-sided himself as there is a fairly deep bunker between his ball and the tucked left side flag/hole. A very delicate, precise flop is called for if he wants to get up-and-down. After three confidence building practice swings Derrick makes the shot. A little to anxious to see the result, he lifts up out of the shot and blades the ball, which goes dead under the top lip of the bunker and completely disappears from view under the sand. Oh that’s just great! Rather than climb up the face of the steep bunker, he stands outside and on top of the bunker to look for his ball. Seeing nothing of his ball, he tells his fellow competitors he will be taking an unplayable and intends to play the ball under the stroke-and-distance option. He uses his club to probe under the lip area of the bunker. He dislodges a ball which then rolls down the face of the bunker and comes to rest in the middle. He smooths out the area where he was probing for his ball. Walks around to the flat side of the bunker, grabs a nearby rake, walks in and retrieves the ball, then smooths out his footprints upon exit. He returns to the spot of his previous stroke, properly drops the ball, gathers himself, and makes a pretty good shot onto the green, considering. He two putts to complete the play of the hole. Standing on the next tee, he becomes aware the ball he completed play of the hole with was not his original ball, but had to have been a stray ball which was also buried under the lip of the bunker.

In stroke play, what is Derrick’s score for the 4th hole?

A. 7

B. 9

C. 11

D. What ever you do Derrick, don’t tee off. If he doesn’t correct playing the wrong ball, he will be DQed.

Answer

A. No penalties for moving his ball in play nor for the search method he employed as Derrick first made a declaration he intended to invoke the provisions of Rule 28, Ball Unplayable. He also announced he intended to choose option “a”, the stroke and distance option. The prohibitions of R14-3 only apply when a ball is in a hazard or when a ball, having been lifted from a hazard, may be dropped or placed in the hazard. The option announced has him dropping outside the bunker. As such, he was entitled to smooth the area where he had used his club to probe for the ball. He was also permitted to smooth the bunker after he retrieved the ball that had rolled down the face. Neither is the smoothing of where he walked into the bunker after retrieving the ball a breach of R13-2 because he needed to enter the bunker to retrieve the ball he dislodged from the lip as this was the ball he intended for completing play of the hole; therefore, he is entitled to restore the bunker to its original condition before his next stroke.

The fact this was not his original ball is curious, but not a penalty. When proceeding under R28a the player is not required to first identify his ball as would be the case with R28 b or c. In all three cases he is permitted to substitute a ball.

Derrick’s third shot buried under the lip. His fourth was the R28 penalty stroke. Fifth onto the green and two putts for seven.

For more, see Rules 12-1a, 13-2, 13-4 and R28. Also view Decisions 13-2/29.3, 13-4/35.7 and 28/14

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
