Foxfire Hole #14 - Par 5

Foxfire Resort and Golf Club features 36 holes of world-class, North Carolina golf. For nearly four decades golfers from across the globe have come to Foxfire, seeking their unique blend of layout, natural beauty and high-quality service.

Hall of Fame architect Gene Hamm designed these 36 holes to take full advantage of the rolling hills, soft sandy soils and plentiful area lakes.

The course you will be playing this week is the West Course, now called The Red Fox Course which is the members’ favorite. This course offers wide manicured fairways and large elevated fast rolling greens. Water comes into play on 6 holes requiring forced carries from the back tees but with the option of going around the hazards from the forward tees. Fairway bunkers are strategically placed to grab the wayward shot and there is no lack of sand guarding the greens. This beautiful Gene Hamm design offers plenty of “bail out” places to avoid the most severe drop offs and deep faced bunkers.

However, be careful while on the greens. The G-6 hybrid bent grass greens hold shots well, but may confound even the best of putters with their characteristic subtle breaks.

The Red Fox offers its fair share of risk/reward shots often daring the advanced players to cut corners or play it safe. The 2nd hole is the most difficult at Foxfire. With water on the left and a steep climb to a huge green with a deceiving false front, this par 4 plays much longer than the 408 yards on the scorecard from the back tees. The longest hitters may attempt to carry the water, but they need to fly the ball over 260 yards from the back tees to clear the hazard. The 12th hole measures 573 from the back tees with a tight second shot and a challenging uphill approach to a triple tiered green.

We hope you have signed-up and over a beer afterwards hear what is your favorite hole but also your most challenging hole.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

CHILLY SEASON OPENER AT BRYAN PARK FOR SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

Browns Summit, NC (March 7, 2013) -

102 Senior Tour members signed up for the 2013 regular season opener on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour at Bryan Park - The Players Course.

While temperatures gradually rose from the mid 30s at the tournament start, most of the day was still played under very cool conditions. However the Flight winners took the weather in their stride and posted some impressive numbers.

John Franklin, a visiting member from the Piedmont, VA Tour who plays often in Triad Tour events, was the class of the field in the Championship Flight with an even par 72. The Danviille, VA resident was 5 shots clear of Tour veteran Mike Smith of Lewisville.

In A Flight action, another Tour "vet" - Cecil Lockley of Creedmoor took top honors with a 76. "Although Cecil and the rest of the field played from one tee-box shorter than the Championship Flight guys, this was still a strong statement of what he can do" stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. High Point's Larry Hubbard was 1 stroke back in second.

Pinehurst's Tom Kubla was the only B Flight member to break 80, barely getting under that standard with a 79. John Lyda of Advance got his 2013 campaign underway in style with an 81.

It took a playoff to determine the C Flight victor as Steve Neal and Charles Gunn, both of Greensboro, fired identical 86s. Neal prevailed as the winner of the flight which contained 36 entrants.

The next Senior Amateur Tour event will be held on March 14 at Foxfire Country Club in the Pinehurst area.

Openings are available for any amateur golfer over 50 to enter that competition. If interested, contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.

Where Will You Be in the Year-Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 10 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 10 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2013.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

ONLY WHEN THE FORM OF PLAY IS A FACTOR WILL IT BE STATED

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:

http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rules-and-Decisions/

If you have any questions pertaining to this or previous quizzes, please ask.

Questions from week #189

In a 2012 event, Paul Casey’s ball, at rest on the putting green, was picked up by a dog. The dog had a good time of it, running around and was finally nabbed by a spectator. The dog is deemed an outside agency.

Consider the following statements and decide for each if they are True or False:

1. After Paul retrieves the ball, he must replace the ball at the known or estimated spot on the putting green. There is no penalty.

2. If no one, including Paul, had actually seen the dog take the ball, and the ball was not found, it would be deemed lost and Paul would have to proceed under stroke and distance, playing another ball under R27-1.

3. If Paul’s ball were in motion after a stroke from off the putting green and the dog picked it up and ran some distance with it before dropping it, Paul would have no choice but to play the ball from where it was released by the dog.

4. If Paul’s ball were in motion after a stroke from on the putting green and the dog picked it up and ran some distance with it before dropping it, Paul would have no choice but to replace the ball on the estimated spot where the dog first scooped it up.

Answers:

1 and 2 are True.

Because we are concerned with a ball at rest moved by an outside agency, we refer to R18-1. Short and sweet.

For #2 it must be known or virtually certain the ball was indeed moved by an outside agency or the ball would be deemed lost. (See Note to R18-1).

3 and 4 are False.

Because the ball is in motion when deflected/stopped by an outside agency, R19-1 is the reference for both questions.

For scenario “3”, where we are off the green when the stroke is made, Paul must determine where the ball was when the dog picked it up and drop the ball, unless that spot is on a putting green, in which case he would place it on the estimated spot (R19-1a).

For scenario “4” we are on the green and the stroke is cancelled. The ball is replaced and replayed (R19-1b).

Take some time to read the Note attached to Rule 19-1. While this act of picking up the ball would seem to be a deliberate act by the dog, this Note only applies to humans.

For example, if a ball hit by Bubba Watson is purposely deflected by a spectator (an outside agency), the spot where the ball would have ended up would need to be estimated, as per the guidance in the Note. The dog is an animate outside agency and thus covered under the main body of R19-1, not the Note.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
