2012 SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR
THURSDAY, MARCH 8
BRYAN PARK (CHAMPIONS COURSE)

-----

On March 8 - Play the Legendary Rees Jones Champions Course at Bryan Park

There’s not much to say about this venue – it is a great course to play and will be one of your favorites if you’ve never played it before.

The Champions Course opened in 1990 by the legendary Rees Jones. Therefore be warned, it can become a real skill challenge! It is a big time course that is always looked at and most times selected for competitive rounds to separate the real golfer from the pretenders.

Play this course Thursday and you will be able to match your card against many of the collegiate and future PGA stars as well as The US Amateurs.

The quick review: Bent grass Greens and Bermuda Fairways and other accolades too many to mention - as an example the site of the 2010 US Amateur Publinks Tournament.

This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend.

  • Runner up best new public course in the country Golf Digest 1990.
  • One of the best New Public Courses in The Country - Top 10 You Can Play - Golf 1991.
  • Four star rating and honored with the distinction of a GREAT VALUE - Golf Digest's Places to Play 1994-95, 1996-97
  • Noted as one of the few public courses worthy to host the U.S. Open - Golf World 1992
  • One of the top 12 golf courses in North Carolina - Tee Time Golf 1995
  • "Best In State" Rankings - Golf Digest 1995-96, 1997-98
  • Listed in "America's 500 Best Places You Can Play" - Golf Digest 1996.
  • (A ranking of the 10 best public and resort courses in all 50 states, the Champions ranked third in North Carolina.)
  • Listed in "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play" as the #12 best affordable golf course in the country - Golf Digest 1996.

PLAYOFF HIGHLIGHTS 3RD STRAIGHT SENIOR TOUR SELL-OUT

The thermometer hit 80 today to the delight of a sold-out field of Senior Amateur Golf Tour Members at Bentwinds Country Club. Although brisk winds and fast greens affected a majority of the players, resulting in higher scores across the board, the top guns in each flight tamed the conditions and turned in some impressive scores.

For the second event in a row it would take more than 18 holes to determine a winner in the Championship Flight. Ahoskie's Bill Long and Mark Macejko of Vass both carded regulation 73s making it necessary for them to go out and decide the issue in a sudden-death playoff. Macejko took First Place honors the way a Championship Flight playoff should be won - with a birdie on the 1st playoff hole.

In A Flight competition, Rockingham's John East edged Walt Janis of Greensboro by a single stroke with a 76. Only 3 strokes separated the top 5 competitors in the flight.

The B Flight was even tighter, if that can be possible. Ron Caulder of North Myrtle Beach and Fuquay-Varina's Tom Handy both finished with 77s - exceptionally low B Flight scores (no one else in the flight broke 80), but Caulder was unable to saddle up for a playoff due to travel constraints, effectively giving Handy the title.

James Howard, a Tour veteran of over 10 campaigns was one of 2 Tour members to break 90 in the C Flight with an 88. He needed every good shot he hit, just edging Cary's Wayne Jones by a single stroke. It was Jones' best Tour effort to this point. "Wayne got his "feet wet" last year with his Tour play", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I have a feeling this could be a break-out year for him".

The next Senior Tour Event is at Bryan Park Champions Course in Greensboro on March 8th. Any amateur golfer over 50 can compete in that event by contacting Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #130

Terry and Mike end up tied for low gross in their club's stroke play championship. As per the conditions of the competition, in case of a tie at the end of the final round, there will be a three-hole play-off starting at the 16th. After that is goes to sudden death.

On the 16th, a par five, both players are on the green; Terry in two, about 40 feet from the hole and Mike in three, six feet from the hole. Terry putts first, his ball stopping about 6 inches from the cup. Mike remarks, "Great putt, nice birdie, Terry."

Terry lifts his ball and moves to retrieve the flagstick. Mike makes his putt, for a birdie four. The players tee off on the next hole and twenty minutes later walk off the 18th green and report to the head pro with a hole-by-hole and nearly stroke-by-stroke recount of the playoff.

Who is the club champion?

A. Terry

B. Mike

C. Neither Terry nor Mike, they have to go to sudden death

D. No clue.

Answer:

The correct answer is: B, Mike. On the first playoff hole, Terry lifted his ball and failed to hole out. Thus, under Rule 3-2 he is DQed.

This is a stroke play event and even with just two competitors in the playoff, it continues to be stroke play and players must hole out to continue with the playoff. See R33-6.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
