Congratulations to the 2017 Senior Amateur Tour National Champions!
Mark Hodges wins the Senior Amateur Golf Tour Championship by just one shot over Chad Frank!
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Mark Hodges from Charlotte wins his first ever Senior Amateur Tour Championship title over Chad Frank of Orlando by one shot on the last hole. Hodges & Mike Gentry both posted stellar 3 under par 69’s on day one at the difficult Arthur Hills course in Palmetto Dunes. Over 250 players competed on all three of the Palmetto Dunes courses, Dolphin Head CC & the Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills course.
The second day’s action took place again in Palmetto Dunes but this time on the Robert Trent Jones course. Hodges started out fine turning in 37 while Chad Frank gained one shot with 36. One the back nine both players started hot, birding the par five tenth hole. Then Frank birdied 12 and Hodges birdied thirteen. Hodges stumbled a bit on fourteen and fifteen with bogie and double bogie but he held on down the stretch for the one shot victory. Hodges finished the championship with rounds of 69-75-144 while Frank posted 74-71-145 posting the low round on day two.
Tim Ford from Columbus, OH finished with 75-74-149 as well as Randy Dees from Hilton Head also with 73-76-149. Keith Storm from Orlando rounded out the top five at 150.
In the A flight, Jeff Hughes (Charlotte) held a one shot lead after day one over 2 other players. Hughes played solid all day and never gave anyone a chance to catch him and wins his first National Championship with round of 75-77-152 for the three shot victory. Rob Clair (Michigan) finished solo second with 76-79-155 and Jeff Zipay (Columbus), Joe Natola (Chicago) and Dwight Seals (Indiana-Western KY) all finished at 156.
Darrell Hagwood of Central Carolina fired a two day total of 158 to win the B Flight Championship by just three shots. Parker Whitt (Central Carolina) and Ron Gburek (Charlotte) both fired two day totals of 161 with Reggie Livingston (Chicago) finishing fourth at 163.
The C Flight Champion went to Jim Wittersheim of Charlotte at 172 who won over two players on his very last hole of the tournament. Chuck Snider (Charlotte) and Joe Harris (Orlando) finished tied at 173 also Van Storie (Charlotte) and TJ James tied 4th at 175.
In the Team Cup, Charlotte took home the cup with a stroke total of 1251 followed by Orlando at 1300, Louisiana 1316, Central Carolina at 1323 and Hilton Head rounded out the top five at 1329.
Special thanks go out to Palmetto Dunes, the host resort and the staff at the Trent Jones, Fazio and Arthur Hills courses. Palmetto Dunes was the headquarters for both the Golfweek & Senior National Championships which hosted over 1,100 players in one week.
