Mark Hodges, Ron Brady, Russell McDonald, Mitch Janotha, and Mitch Green all won The Senior Open Regional hosted by Rock Barn Golf and Country Club on August 20th and 21st.
The Low Country Regional brought members from 7 of our Local Tours across the country to Conover, NC.
The last Senior Amateur Tour Regional for the 2024 season was contested at the beautiful yet difficult Rock Barn Golf and Country Club in Conover, NC. Featuring two courses named for their architects, the par 71 Jackson Course tested the field on Day One. The Final Day was played under unusually cool temps for an August day in North Carolina on the challenging par 72 Jones Course.
Champ Flight members, Mark Hodges (Charlotte, NC) and overall season points leader, Bruce Gantt (Charlotte, NC), was tied both carding 71 after the first round. The field fell away from Hodges on Day 2 and cruised to an unchallenged 5 stroke lead for the double points and the trophy.
Ron Brady (Central Carolina) led wire-to-wire in the A Flight, taking a slim lead on Day 1 with 5 birdies and posting a 71. The Jones Course proved again its dominance over the field and Brady was able to remain standing with a comfortable second round 76 for a 5 shot margin win and the regional trophy.
B Flight featured a great dogfight to the end between Bobby Shipwash (Central Carolina) and Russell McDonald (Charlotte, NC). Shipwash handled the Jackson Course with a blazing a 74 to sleep on a one-shot lead going into Day Two. McDonald also tamed Jackson Course on Day One with a strong score of 76 to trail by just 2 strokes for the Final Day start. According to McDonald, a Par, Birdie start was enough for him to take the lead on the second hole of the day and carded a very respectable 81 on the Jones Course to hold the lead to the end.
David Janotha (Charlotte, NC) and Tony O'Brien (Charlotte, NC) set the pace in the C Flight contest as a two-man race after both carding extremely low 78's on the Jackson Course. Day 2 on the Jones Course, Janotha stayed hot and finished with a strong 83 and a Two-Day total of 161 for the C Flight Regional Title.
Mitch Green (Charlotte, NC) continued his winning ways in 2024, taking home his second Two-Day contest for the year and his first Regional Title. Green went into Day 2 tied with Hank Brinegar (Charleston. SC) with 86s on the Jackson Course. Green held off Brinegar and the rest of the field by 4 strokes, carding a 90 on the Jones Course and collecting the trophy.
Congratulations to Victor Glenn (Charlotte, NC) for winning the Cleveland CBX4 Zipcore Wedges donated by Srixon with proceeds ($220) going to the Jimmy V Foundation - Cancer Research.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and we look forward to seeing you next year.
