Sleepy Hole Classsic
Tournament Recap

On Wednesday, July 8th, the Virginia Senior Amateur Tour faced an unexpected challenge just minutes into the round at Sleepy Hole Golf Course.

After most of the field had completed just two holes — and a few players had reached the third — weather moved over the course, forcing play to be suspended. Players returned to the cart barn and waited out a rain delay that stretched more than 90 minutes.

When play resumed, the sun began to shine and the field delivered a terrific finish, with two of the flight champions being crowned in playoffs. It was a great testament to the players who stuck it out and made the Sleepy Hole Classic another outstanding Virginia Senior Amateur Tour event.

Congratulations to all of our Sleepy Hole Classic Champions.

Flight Champions
Soggy start leads to a steamy finish

Champ Flight: Jon Coullier continued his strong season with a steady round of 75 (+3) to capture Championship Flight honors.  Coullier was the only player in the flight to break 80, finishing five shots clear of Kevin Martin.

A Flight: Mark Hanna fired the round of the day with an outstanding 72 (Even).  In a deep A Flight field, Hanna separated himself with a three-shot victory over Hawk Hawkins. The defining moment of the round came when Hanna holed out for eagle with a spectacular chip-in—easily the Shot of the Day. Ron Sullins claimed the final money position by scorecard tiebreaker over Jason Hall.

B Flight: B Flight delivered one of the day’s most dramatic finishes as Dave Mullis and Nealan Chandler both posted 79 (+7). After 18 holes could not separate them, Mullis claimed the title in a sudden-death playoff.

C Flight: AJ Bossard and Ralph Perkins matched each other with rounds of 82 (+10), sending C Flight to sudden death. Bossard came out on top in the playoff, while Perkins secured runner-up honors and Mike Strickland finished third with an 85.

D Flight: Audie Murphy held off a tightly packed leaderboard with an impressive 85 (+13). Jim O’Neill finished one shot back at 86, while Fred Gilbert and Will Spittle rounded out the top four money positions.
