Dave Rummells, Dwayne Divers, Doug Chapman, Ted Olkowski, and David Kubik emerged victorious at the Senior Florida Regional, hosted by Mission Resort and Club. The event featured two challenging courses: El Campeón and Las Colinas.
Mission Resort + Club, a serene retreat nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of Central Florida and surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Lake County, recently welcomed 81 members of the Senior Amateur Tour from 14 different Tours across the Nation. Under ideal weather conditions, the venue was filled with all the players united by a common goal.
During the inaugural day of the Champ Flight, the scores were remarkably close, and one could observe the players exhibiting a determined demeanor as they approached the first tee. Chad Frank (Orlando) emerged as the leader after day one, closely pursued by Dave Rummells (Orlando) just one stroke behind and Bill Shufelt (Orlando) two strokes behind. On the second day at El Champeon, one of Florida's oldest courses proved tough challenges, requiring players to strategize effectively. Rummells surged ahead on the back nine, securing four birdies to clinch the trophy with scores 77-76-153, while Frank pursued him but ultimately ran out of holes to secure second place carding a two-day total of 158. Sanford Schenke (Orlando) finished third with a score of 163, respectively.
In the A Flight, players encountered numerous familiar faces from the Senior Tour, along with formidable competition. Dwayne Divers (Orlando) has demonstrated remarkable consistency this season. Maintaining a lead is challenging, especially given the caliber of players trailing behind, which keeps competitors vigilant. Al Clerico (Orlando) finished in second place with a 157, while Robin Gomez (Orlando) secured third scoring 158. Both chased vigorously throughout the day; however, Divers managed to maintain his lead from start to finish, achieving a well-deserved victory carding 74-81-155.
B Flight witnessed an intense competition that extended all the way to the 36th hole. Doug Chapman (Michigan) and Jeff Kelly (Orlando) finished the first day tied. After a back-and-forth battle across 35 holes, Chapman’s par on the challenging 18th hole ultimately secured his victory with scores 80-85-165. With Kelly carding a two-day total score of 168, claiming second place, Tim Matthews (Southern Virginia) taking the third position scoring a 169, followed closely by Herb Boasso (Jacksonville) with a 172 taking fourth place.
On the first day of the C Flight, leader Gregg Carr (Orlando) began with a one-shot advantage. However, after nine holes, Ted Olkowski (Jacksonville) caught up to him. Olkowski then accelerated on the back nine, ultimately securing a two-shot victory (86-89-175) over Michael Sickles (Augusta, GA) and Jim Siders (Columbus, OH) both carding a two-day total of 177 taking the second and third position. Carr with a score of 179 claiming fourth place, and MJ Moore (Orlando, FL) finishing with fifth place with a 180.
The D Flight, as is customary, culminated in an intense shootout right up to the final moments. On the first day, leaders Shep Ellis (Orlando) and David Kubik (Augusta, GA) battled fiercely until the last hole, with Kubik securing a pivotal par to claim a narrow victory by one stroke over Ellis with scores 95-93-188. Ellis turning his scorecard in with a two-day total of 189, taking second place. Larry Kates (Jacksonville) and Dave Weir (Southern Virginia) completed the top four positions.
