Sun-City Carolina Lakes - Season Opener

Posted: 2/14/2019 2:58:07 PM

The opening event of the 2019 season kicked off at Sun-City, Carolina Lakes.  76 golfers teed it up in some chilly temperatures to start the year.  Thanks to all that came out and we look forward to another competitive season.

In the Championship flight it was our 2018 champion that took home first place honors.  Mark Hodges had to sink a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th to claim the victory over Jeff Brishke.  Both players shot 73 (+1) on the day but it was Mark who won the scorecard playoff.  Scott Patnode, making his senior debut claimed 3rd place with a score of 74 (+2).  Newcomer, Brian Swenson also shot 74 (+2) but lost on the scorecard playoff, took home 4th.  Rounding out the top 5 was Dick Vetter, another rookie on the tour, shooting 75 (+3).

In the A flight, Jim Goulding led wire to wire on this day and claimed victory with a score of 75 (+3).  Phil Seamon too home second place with a score of 80 (+8).  Wayne Kinley took solo 3rd with a score of 81 (+9).  We had a 4 way playoff to settle 4th and 5th as 4 golfers tied at 82 (+10).  In the end it was John Jarell taking 4th and Scott Ide taking home 5th.

In the B flight, Rob Geilhausen takes home first place honors with a score of 77 (+5) winning by 4 shots.  Bernie Loehr takes home solo 2nd with a score of 81 (+9).  3rd, 4th and 5th had to be settled again by use of the scorecard playoff as 4 golfers tied at 82.  In the end, Ron Gburek takes 3rd, Toby Tyler 4th and Bob Deaton 5th.

In the C flight, it was a newcomer that takes top spot.  Tom Johnson shot a score of 84 (+12) to win by 1 over Randall Garver and Larry Hinson, both players shooting 83 (+13).  Randall takes second based on the scorecard playoff.  4th and 5th again had to be settle via the same scorecard playoff as 3 golfers tied at 86 (+14).  In the end it was Rondal Gibson taking 4th and Bill Holland taking home 5th.

Thanks to all that came out and I look forward to seeing everyone back for our next event at Cabarrus CC on the 25th of February.
