Tournament Recap
Mattaponi Springs Had a Story in Every Flight

The Virginia Senior Amateur Tour brought 51 players to The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs on Wednesday, August 12, for The Classic — and the final leaderboard produced a little bit of everything.

A Flight came down to a single shot. B Flight had one of the deepest leaderboards of the day. D Flight had three players stacked just one stroke behind the champion. And four separate flights needed the scorecard to settle at least one money position.

Ron Sullins fired the low round of the entire tournament with a 74. Michael Adams created just enough separation to take B Flight. Arthur Baxter survived a one-shot battle in D Flight. And in C Flight, Ralph Perkins finally broke through for his first Virginia Senior Tour victory.

Five flights. Five champions. Five different roads to a trophy.

Flight Champions
The Champions of The Classic
Champ Flight — Garry Sutterfield
93
With Jon Coullier forced to withdraw, Garry Sutterfield was the last man standing in Champ Flight and carried home the trophy from Mattaponi Springs.
A Flight — Ron Sullins
74 (+2)
Nobody in the field went lower than Ron Sullins. His 74 was the round of the tournament and gave him a one-shot victory over Stuart Williams and Malcolm Adams, who both finished at 75.
Williams claimed second place on the scorecard tiebreaker.
B Flight — Michael Adams
77 (+5)
With one of the deepest flights in the field chasing him, Michael Adams gave himself exactly what every tournament golfer wants — a little breathing room. Adams posted 77 to finish two shots clear of Brian Gaines.
Gary Cooper and Steve High both finished at 80, with Cooper earning third place on the scorecard tiebreaker.
C Flight — Ralph Perkins
80 (+8)
For Ralph Perkins, this one meant a little more.
Perkins posted an 80, finished three shots clear of Mike Strickland and walked away from Mattaponi Springs with his first Virginia Senior Tour victory.
The breakthrough finally came at The Classic.
Tom Grenell and Geo Clarke both finished at 85, with Grenell taking third on the scorecard tiebreaker.
D Flight — Arthur Baxter
90 (+18)
Arthur Baxter didn't have much room to spare — but he didn't need it.
Baxter's 90 was enough for a one-shot victory while Jim Witko, Audie Murphy and Will Graves all finished directly behind him at 91.
The scorecard settled the chase behind Baxter, with Witko taking second and Murphy third.
