Regional Produces some Great Scoring!!
The first ever Low Country Regional was held this past
weekend at Caledonia Golf and Fish Camp and True Blue. Both courses were in good shape and the golf
scores demonstrated that!
In the Championship flight there was only one question being
asked; How low is Dale Fuller going to go.
After firing a first-round score of 5 under par 65 all eyes were
watching. Dale Came out the next day at
True Blue and did what needed to be done to erase any doubt that day one was a
fluke. Dale played steady golf and
birdied each of the three par fives on the front side to get to 8 under
par. He quickly birdied the first two
holes on the back and finished with another birdie on 17 and his lone bogie
left him with another five under 67! Dan
Constantino did his best to apply some pressure but it was just to much to overcome,
dan fired rounds of 70-73 to finish in second with Bruce Gant 75-71 rounding
out the top three.
The A flight also saw some spectacular golf. Doug Christina, Tony Carroll, John Caufield
and Danny Sweetman got the party started with scores of 73,74,75, and 76
consecutively! To set the stage for a very nice battle on day 2. Doug took control on Day 2 and like Dale in
the Champ Flight, also did what a front runner needs to do, he birdied 2 of the
3 par fives on the front to fire a 2 under par 35 and build a comfortable lead
that was able to hold off a hard charging Tony on the back nine. The 2-shot difference was just what the
doctor ordered as Doug finished with a two-day total of 147 t Tony’s 159. Danny Sweetman had a very nice round of 75 at
True Blue to take home third place with a two-day total of 151.
The B flight also saw some very low numbers produced by some
excellent play. Norm Fay started things
off with a spectacular 3 over par 73 at Caledonia to open up a 3-stroke lead on
day one over Gene Jones who fired a 76 which was one better than William Sasser
and Michael Smith, both of whom fired 77’s.
The common theme showed up once again as Norm birdied on of the early
par 5’s, played steady golf and finished the front at one under to open up a
huge lead as the closest competitors struggled on the outward nine. One person
who didn’t struggle was Rob Walker who posted two eagles on the day to fire a
75 to do his best to try to run down Norm but in the end, he just ran out of
holes as Norm Claimed the victory with a two-day total of 152, Rob took home second
on a scorecard playoff with Michael Smith who both posted two day totals of
155.
The C Flight also saw the day one leader open up a nice lead
as Michael Bennet posted a very nice round of 78 to take a four-shot lead into
day two over Mike Wallace who fired and 82 and Carnell Luckett who posted an
83. Michael also played steady on the
front nine at True Blue posting a solid 5 over par 42 to increase his lead and never
really be challenged on the back nine.
His two-day total was 162 good for a five-shot victory over Kenneth
Beckett, 167 two day total and Dallas Shackleford who fired a final round 80
slid into third place!
The D flight continued the theme of the tournament as all
day 1 leaders held on to win their flight, probably the first time I have ever
seen that in any two day, regional or not!
The D Flight saw Ron Lucas post a solid first day score of
90 but unlike the other flights, Ron had quite the battle going on all
day. Jonathan Phillips posted the low
round of the day (89) to climb to with in one stroke of Ron but he to also ran
out of holes to chase him down as Ron Secured the victory with a two day total
of 184. Jonathan Phillips and Mark
Simmons both tied with two day totals of 185 with Jonathan taking home the
second place $$ on the scorecard playoff.
