TIGHT RACES, LOW SCORES AT SENIOR TOUR CHAPEL RIDGE EVENT
Posted: 7/25/2014 10:33:02 AM

Pittsboro, NC  (July 24, 2014) -  Johnny Adams of Cary was trying to win his second Senior Amateur Golf Tour event in a row today at Chapel Ridge Golf Club.  After firing a 70 last week at Greensboro Country Club on the Farm Course for the victory in the Championship Flight, his 72 today was one stroke short of Craig Sturdivant's effort.

Sanford's Sturdivant, no stranger to the winner's circle "on-Tour", posted 4 birdies during the round.  It was his 5th victory of the season in 12 starts.  This win also enabled him to lengthen his lead in the season-long Championship Flight Points Standings race.

While Adams and Sturdivant were fighting it out in the Championship Flight, the lowest score of the entire event actually belonged to Raleigh's Rick LaFata with a 2-under 70 in the A Flight.  LaFata was 2 shots clear of McLeansville's Ron Brady.  "This makes two weeks running that the A Flight winner has posted a lower score than the Championship Flight", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.  "It just goes to show that in golf, anything can happen on a given day".

The low scores continued in the B Flight with Pinehurst's Ed Zieglar and Durham's Jerry Widdowson both shooting 74s during regulation play.  Zieglar emerged the winner in the ensuing sudden-death playoff with a par on the first extra hole.

The good play of Raleigh residents continued in the C Flight with Richard Glick equaling his career low Tour effort with an 80 that was four shots clear of a trio of members:  Greensboro's Len Bullock, Elby Hatfield of Archdale, and Sophia's Dennis Bryant.

Next week's event takes the Tour to Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro on Thursday, July 31.  That event is currently sold out.
