KNIGHTDALE'S JOHNSON GETS 1ST TOUR WIN AT BENTWINDS CC
Posted: 7/23/2010 11:52:51 AM
Fuquay-Varina, NC (July 24, 2010) - Mike Johnson has played 16 events on the Raleigh Senior Amateur Golf Tour during the 2010 season. The 3-year Tour veteran has also got a solid grip on 2nd place in the B Flight on the Tour's season-long points standings race. He's managed to break 80 a couple of times this year on-Tour and has been a model of consistency lately with scores of 81, 82, and 83 in his last 3 Tour efforts. The one thing he didn't have was a Tour win. That is until today. Johnson toured the 5,947-yard, par 72 Bentwinds Country Club course with an 80 that grabbed top honors for him in the Flight. He needed every putt that fell, edging a trio of golfers by 1 shot, while finishing 2 strokes ahead of 4 additional competitors. "I really enjoy playing on this Tour", said Johnson as he received his $170.00 Mastercard debit card for leading the flight. "I just have a good time out here". Joining Johnson in the winner's circle was Sanford's Alan Dirk, who enjoyed a comfortable 5-stroke margin of victory in the Championship Flight after firing a 2-under 70. Dirk is no stranger to victory "on-Tour", having won last week at Greensboro Country Club. "Alan is always one of the guys to beat in the Championship Flight", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. Mike Allison of Durham, who last week at Greensboro lost a playoff for the top spot in the A Flight, managed to avoid another playoff by the slimmest of margins - 1 stroke - as his 75 nosed out Lewisville's Mike Smith. "Allison's consistency has been impressive lately", noted Hallenbeck. Doug Shank of Raleigh not only notched a victory in the C Flight with a very impressive 82, he also gained a "battlefield promotion" to the B Flight for future Tour competition as his Tour handicap went into the higher Flight's range. Shank, who has played in only 5 Tour events, has shown dramatic improvement. Anyone over 50 who would like information on playing in a Senior AmateurTour event can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.
