BARBEE GETS "HOME-COOKED" SR TOUR PLAYOFF WIN
Posted: 3/25/2011 10:20:37 AM
Graham, NC  (March 24, 2011)  -  Have you ever wondered how you would handle the pressure of a 6-foot downhill "slider" in a 3-man, sudden death playoff for a Tour victory?  Burlington's Dexter Barbee knows how he'd handle it - he'd make the sucker for a birdie and his 1st Tour victory.  Playing in the B Flight of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour at The Challenge, his home course, the Tour rookie finished regulation play with an 80 - the same as Durham's Jerry Widdowson and Gene Martin of Apex. Barbee struck the decisive putt firmly, "It's a good thing it hit the hole, 'Cause it would have gone 10 feet by" he said.  "Having knowledge of the course was an advantage, I knew where to hit the ball".

Tour veteran Mike Smith of Lewisville shot an even par 72 for the top spot in the Championship Flight.  Smith's effort was aided by a chip-in eagle at the 473 yard, par 5, 7th hole.

Pinehurst's Chuck Taubersmith and Ed Gregory of Cary were 3 strokes back at 75. Laurinburg's James McMillan, who finished 1st last week at Willow Creek CC in High Point, made it back-to-back A Flight Tour wins as his 76 nipped Thomasville's Gene Jones by a single stroke.  Jones, a Tour newcomer this year, enjoyed his highest finish of the young season.

The C Flighters were on their game today as 7 out of the field of 24 players managed to break 90, led by Madison's Rob Leggett.   Leggett fired an 83 for a comfortable 3-stroke edge over another Tour rookie - Southern Pine's Tony Robison.  Greensboro's TJ Warren and Pinehurst's John Henely finished 1 behind Robison with a pair of 87s.

"We're just getting started this year", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.  "We're still accepting new members and any amateur golfer over 50 can contact me at 336-495-6556, or email me at
behgolf@aol.com for information regarding competing on-Tour".
