TRIAD PLAYERS DO WELL IN SENIOR AM TOUR EVENT
Posted: 6/17/2011 2:20:43 PM

Carthage, NC   (June 16, 2011)  -  Triad Tour players may have driven a little farther to compete in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Little River Farm, but for a number it was well worth the trip, as three of the four flights were won by Triad members in very tight finishes.  All three of those members were Tour "rookies" as well.

Leading that group with his 2nd victory of the season was Thomasville's Gene Jones who took the A Flight by a single stroke over a trio of golfers.  His 75 was one better than Durham's Glenn Garrett, Southern Pines' Wiley Barrett and Cecil Lockley of Creedmoor.

Graham's Louis Herndon, like Jones, also edged three opponents by 1-stroke to take top honors in the B Flight with a 78.  Finishing one back were Greensboro's Vic Robertson, Doug Shank of Raleigh, and Durham's Twig Avent.  This was Herndon's first Tour win.

The third Triad member to find the winner's circle also claimed his first Tour title, as Mike Hunter of Greensboro shot an 85 to nip Durham's Brian Costine by one for the C Flight crown.  Two Raleigh veterans - Harold Booker and Benny Miller were one behind Costine.

The sole Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour member to grab a win was David Williams of Apex, who enjoyed a relatively comfortable 3-stroke advantage over, once again,  three other Championship Flight players:  Eden's Jim Gammon, Summerfield's Steve Lambert, and Lexington's Don Tabat.  Williams fired a 2-over 74.

The next Senior Tour event is a big one - the 3rd "Major" of the year at Mill Creek GC in Mebane, on June 23.  There are still spots available on that roster.  Any amateur golfer over 50 can call Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 for information on how to compete in that event.
