4-IN-A-ROW, C FLIGHT BIRDIES HIGHLIGHT SENIOR EVENT
Posted: 8/12/2011 6:07:21 AM
Greensboro, NC  (August 11, 2011)  -  If you're gonna win 4 events in-a-row "on-Tour", you might as well do it in style, posting 5 birdies in your first 10 holes and cruising to a 3-under par victory in the Championship Flight of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour.  That's the way Pinehurst's Rick Luzar did it today at Grandover Resort.  Playing from the 6,300 yard Blue tees of the West Course, he was 3-shots clear of Lewisville's Mike Smith, who merely shot even par.  "It's getting so that when Rick's playing, the rest of us are going for 2nd place" said flight member Johnny Adams of Cary. Luzar's 4 in-a-row is a Raleigh/Triad record for consecutive wins "on-Tour".

On the other end of the scale stood Danville, VA's Kenny Powell on the tee-box of his 18th hole of the day.  The C Flight member had never won a Tour event, and hadn't registered a birdie all day up to this point.  Powell managed a birdie on this, his final hole of regulation play, which tied him for the flight lead with Pinehurst's Dane McCaffrey.  Upon going out to Hole #1 in their sudden-death playoff, Powell made it two birdies in-a-row for the improbable win!  "I can't believe back-to-back birdies after I hadn't made one all day" said a happy Powell as he accepted his $200.00 Master Card for the win. It appears that if you want to win a playoff on this Tour, you better be thinking "birdie", because that was also what it took in the 4-man playoff for the A Flight top spot.

After regulation play Steve Smith of Pinehurst, Doug Masters and Marshall Wolfe of Clemmons , and Burlington's Dexter Barbee all shot 72s.  Smith was the "birdie-man" this time as he continued his successful Tour season with the win.

In B Flight action, another Danville, VA golfer took his first title of the year as Raymond Newman fashioned a 75 that nipped North Myrtle Beach's Ronnie Caulder by a single stroke.  They were the only two B Flight members out of a field of 30 to break the 80 barrier.
