SENIOR TOUR'S FINAL MAJOR HELD AT ANDERSON CREEK
Posted: 8/27/2011 9:59:13 AM
Spring Lake, NC  (August 25, 2011)  -  The final Major Championship of the 2011 Senior Amateur Golf Tour schedule was contested today at Anderson Creek Golf Club.  Highly competitive races were staged in each of the four flights in contention.

The largest margin of victory was a mere 2 strokes which occurred in the A Flight.   Zebulon's Randy Bunn fired a 75 to take A Flight honors with Joe Cox of Apex and Creedmoor's Cecil Lockley 2 back at 77.  Bunn's 75 was, in fact, the lowest score in the entire event including the Championship Flight.   The "Big Boys" in the Champ Flight played from approximately 400 yards farther back than the other 3 Flights and Mark Craige of Raleigh along with Southern Pines Gary Strickfaden both posted 77s to tie for the top spot in the Flight.  Unfortunately for Mr. Strickfaden, who had to leave for a previous engagement, he was not able to hang around for the sudden-death playoff which determines 1st place, essentially handing the win to Craige.  It was Craige's first Tour win in just his 4th career start.

Two players who did hang around for their playoff were Tom Handy of Fuquay-Varina and Durham's Tom Whatley in the B Flight.  Both were the class of the field with 82s in regulation play.  It took 4 holes to determine the winner in the playoff as Handy holed a chip from 30 yards off the green on the 3rd playoff hole to keep the playoff alive before winning on the next hole after Whatley's 2nd shot found the water on the par 4, 11th hole.

All you needed to do to finish "in-the-money" in the C Flight was break 90 and that's what 3 of the 23 flight members did.  James Eatmon of Sims led the way with an 86, followed by Durham's Bill McGee with an 87, while Greensboro's Barry Whitesell was the 3rd flight member to break the 90 barrier with an 89.
