Lots of Things Going On at First Tournament of the Year
Ocala, FL--Course conditions, weather, battlefield promotions and local course knowledge all played a role in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour of North Central Florida tournament of 2012.
Low score of the day was "A Flighter" Dave Smith who shot a smooth par 72. Al Kommel captured the "B Flight with a career round of 74, while Tom Gallagher took the "Championship Flight", shooting a 78; Mickey Salomone won the "C Flight", carding an 88.
Stone Creek Golf Club in Ocala was in as perfect condition as possible as the 24 golfers teed it up at 10 a.m. Fairways were beautiful and greens were cut close, firm and lightening fast.
Meanwhile, after freezing temperatures early in the morning, it warmed up to a very pleasant day. However, as it warmed up, the wind picked up and at times gusts blew at about 30 knots.
Smith’s dominating win is very understandable since Stone Creek is his home course. And, more importantly, he is the reigning Club Champion. Obviously local knowledge on the greens helped as he rolled in two birdies on number 2 and 6.
Kommel started the day in the "C Flight", but after shooting the lights out with a par 36 on the front, he got an instant "battlefield promotion" to "B Flight."
Dennis Nault finished second in the "A Flight" with an 80 and Erich Truax placed third with an 81.
In the "B Flight", Roger Little finished second with an 80 and Scott Gourley placed third with an 86.
Rounding out the "C Flight" was Dave Raybin who shot an 89 and third was Ray Morawski with a 90.
The next tournament is Thursday, Jan. 26, at Red Tail Golf Club in Sorento, FL. Deadline to register and pay is Thursday, Jan. 19.
