GOURLEY, PLESSER WIN FIRST TIME; MORRISON WINS BACK-TO-BACK
LONGWOOD, FL—Scott Gourley and Barry Plesser won for the first time on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour of North Central Florida at Alaqua Country Club Thursday (May 17); Wayne Morrison convincingly clinched his second win in a row.
Playing in the “B Flight”, Gourley started hot with a birdie on the ever challenging first hole and then rolled in another on the seventh on the way to an 88. Gourley has previously won on the Golfweek Amateur Tour, but this win is his first on the Senior Tour, which he played last year.
Plesser, who is in the “C Flight”, had one birdie on the par 4 fifth hole and finished the day with a 96. Plesser is a first year Tour member, bringing in the victory in only his fourth appearance.
It was a strong round of 77 by Morrison, who played in the “A Flight” that led to his second tournament win in a row. A well-played back nine of par 36, that included two birdies, was the “key to the victory”, Morrison said. He also had a birdie on the fourth hole.
Placing second in the “A Flight” was Tom Vail with an 84.
Placing second in the “C Flight” was Jim Castello with a 97.
“A Flight” birdies paid $14 each; “B” and “C Flight” birdies paid $30 each.
Plans are already in the works for the National Championship in Pinehurst, NC, Nov. 13-14. The North Central Florida Tour is anticipating fielding a full team to participate in the National Team competition. A minimum of two entries per flight are required.
The first intra-state Tour Challenge is scheduled for July 2 at the Black Diamond Quarry course. This will pit the Tampa, Orlando, and North Central Florida tours against each other for the bragging rights amongst the Florida tours. This is a limited field event and those planning to play should go to the web site and register right away to secure their spot.
The North Central Florida Tour’s next tournament is June 2 at Eagle Dunes. Registration is now open. Practice rounds are available at $30, week day. Because Memorial Day is the week-end prior, the $30 rate cannot be accepted during the holiday week-end. Deadline to register and pay for the tournament is May 26.
