Piedmont Virginia Tour Kicks off 2014 Season

Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Kicks Off 2014 Season at Spring Creek Golf Club

Tuesday April 8, 2014

Gordonsville, VA

17 senior amateur golfers from around the State of Virginia gathered this morning to start a new Golf Tour Season. It is the Tours 3rd season in existence and is part of a network of Tours all over the country. This past November at the National Finals in Pinehurst, NC; the Virginia Tour was able to claim 3 of the 4 National Champions. As the new season gets underway Tour Director Kenny Powell has set his sights on bringing all 4 Championships back this year. “It is a rather high goal but one I feel our guys are capable of obtaining “says Powell.

After rescheduling twice due to wintry weather the group finally got a beautiful 68 degree sunny day to experience one of the Top Golf Courses in the country at Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, VA. In the Championship Flight former National Champion Jim Gallagher from Yorktown showed no signs of off season rust as he used 3 birdies to card a 1 under par 71 for his first win of the season. Mark Wade from Charlottesville finished 2nd with a score of 81.

The A-Flight was led by Rusty Ward from Hopewell with the only other round in the 70’s today. Ward used 2 birdies to give him the 5 stroke victory with a 76. Jim Gaddy from Lynchburg claimed 2nd place in the flight with an 81.

In B-Flight action Jerry Delbridge from Emporia also used 2 birdies during his round to cushion his lead as he won the flight by 4 strokes with his 85. Tour rookie George Russell Jr. from Montpelier finished 2nd with an 89 in his first Tour tournament.

The Tours C-Flight was once again a battle until the final hole to decide its winner. Current C-Flight National Champion David Davis from Martinsville                jumped out to a 4 stroke lead over the rest of the field after the first 6 holes; only to see Bart Truesdell from Huddleston fight his way back to make the turn tied at 45. On the first 2 holes of the back nine Truesdell quickly got himself a 3 stroke lead only to see Davis come back to even it up with a birdie on #13. After Davis carded a double bogie on #17 Truesdell again took a 3 stroke lead into the final hole. Not to give up Davis made 1 more charge by making par on the difficult par 5 closing hole which gave up only 5 pars all day. Truesdell although making a double bogie on the closing hole was able to better Davis by a single stroke with a score of 88 to Davis’s 89 for the win.

The Tour has 19 scheduled tournaments this season before returning to Pinehurst for Nationals in November. The next scheduled tournament is Wednesday April 16th at the Manor Resort in Farmville. Contact Kenny Powell at 434-792-3728 for information or registration by April 14th. Online registration for this or any other tournament may also be made online at www.senioramateurgolftour.net and select the Piedmont Virginia Tour.
