Piedmont Virginia Tour Holds Back to Back Tournaments
Piedmont Virginia
Senior Amateur Tour Has Back to Back Events The Crossings The
Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour returned to action this week with
back to back tournaments beginning on Tuesday August 19th at The
Crossings Golf Club in Glen Allen. Only twelve
members came out to compete at The Crossings in the Tours 13th
tournament of the season which was scheduled one day before the Tours 3rd
Major . Rusty Ward from North Prince George led the
field today with the only score turned in below 80 ; with 78. Ward; who is the
Tours current points leader claimed his 4th consecutive first place
finish and his 8th of the season in the A-Flight. Larry Maitland
carded 5 birdies today to finish in second place with an 80. George Russell Jr. claimed his 1st
Tour win of his inaugural season today in B Flight with a score of 82. Jerry
Delbridge who trailed Russell by 3 strokes at the turn made a charge on the
back nine to even up after 16; only to fall victim to a double bogey on 17
which dropped him back into his 2nd place finish at 83. The C Flight was a 3 way battle between Roy
Hodges, Mike Wren and Tour Director Kenny Powell. Hodges led the group at the
turn with a 41 while Wren and Powell trailed within striking distance at 42 and
43. Wren quickly overcame the deficit on the 10th hole with a
scrambling par from the woods as Hodges fell behind with his double bogey on
the hole. Wren then calmly held on to the advantage until falling victim to a
triple bogey on the closing par four 18th hole which Hodges bogeyed
forcing a play-off hole as they both finished at 86. They went back to the 18th
hole where Hodges once again carded a bogey with Wren this time scoring a
double bogey thus giving Hodges his 3rd victory of the season. Colonial Heritage (Tours
3rd 2014 Major) The Tour next traveled to Colonial Heritage
Golf Club in Williamsburg the following day for it’s 3rd Major of
the season. This time 22 players came out to compete for the berths to National
Finals and double points awarded at this event. Jim Gallagher from Yorktown once again
proved why he is a former National Tour Champion and recently qualified for
both the USGA Senior Amateur Championship and the VSGA Mid-Am Senior
Championship with his fourth sub- par performance on Tour this season.
Gallagher’s minus four 68 was his second tour
win in a row with the same score in both tournaments. It was also his 2nd
Tour Major win this season along with his 3 other Tour wins. Gallagher is now 5
for 5 in Tour tournament wins with a combined score of -10.
“ Jim is a phenomenal golfer and a real asset to our Tour”, stated director
Powell. Tip Wight carded 4 birdies for the day to finish 2nd in the
Championship Flight with a 76. In A Flight action Dean Adams from Jarratt
finally found a way to take away the top spot from Flight and Points leader
Rusty Ward. Adams who was paired along with Ward led by 2 strokes as they made
the turn and extended the lead to 4 through the 17th hole before
falling prey to a triple bogey on the final hole. Ward made a birdie on the
finishing hole to close the gap to a single stroke. Adams claimed his 1st
Tour win with an 81 while Wards win streak ended at 4 in a row and 8 for the
season with his 82. Bob Weaver from VA Beach continued to climb
up in his points race with his 2nd win of the season ; both being in
Majors. Weaver claimed the B Flights top spot with a score of 85. Bill Knarr
collected the second place prize with a score of 87. The C Flight was won by Gary Hines from VA
Beach with a score of 85. In winning his first tournament of the season Hines
carded 2 birdies and could have easily broke the 80 mark had it not been for
two triple bogeys. “ That’s why he is in C Flight; we all shoot ourselves in
the foot in that flight ,” stated Powell. Charlie Snipes also had 2 birdies for
the day in finishing in 2nd place with an 87. The Tour takes a week off for the World
Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach before returning to action
Monday, September 8th at Stoney Creek at Wintergreen.

scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's
the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with
you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the
answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use
your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books
and-Decisions =============================================================== |
Question from week #248: Rule 18-2 says if a player, his partner or either of their caddies,
or the equipment of player/partner touches it purposely or causes his ball in
play to move, except as permitted under the Rules, the player is penalized one
stroke and the ball must be replaced. Which one of the following would not result in a penalty to the
player? A. With his ball sitting in the fairway, a player accidentally moves
his ball with a practice swing. B. With his ball unmarked on the putting green, while using his
towel to disperse clumps of sand from the putting green, the player moves his
ball. C. A players ball sits on pine straw on the edge of a wooded area.
When removing an interfering pine cone, the ball moves about 1/4 inch down into
the straw. D. In order to identify his ball in the rough, a player uses his
finger to steady his ball, while he moves some interfering blades of grass that
block the view. Neither the ball is moved nor the lie of the ball altered. Answer: Only B does not result in a penalty (R23-1). “A” results in a 1-stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced. For why “C” results in a 1-stroke penalty, see the definition of
“moved” and Rule18-2a. The ball must be replaced. Failure to replace in either
case “A” or “C” results in a 2-stroke penalty (what Tiger got nailed with). “D” is a one stroke penalty also under Rule 18-2a for purposely
touching his ball in play. Nothing to replace here, you just can’t purposely
touch it unless permitted by a Rule Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings
Race? There
are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of
the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight. As you
plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are
guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well
you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014. Do you know how many tournaments
you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament
to ensure you have your automatic invitation? Tour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour
uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The
only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during
an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and
wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into
playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every
event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave
my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense
calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best
avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you
are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from
the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the
scheduled shotgun start. Kenny 2014 Tour Membership Roster: 1. Kenny Powell- Danville 434-792-3728 C-Flight 2. Bob Weaver -Va Beach 757-721-9497 B-Flight 3.
