Providence Forge, VA.
27 Senior Amateur Golfers came to the Traditional Groups Royal New Kent Golf Club today to experience the challenge of the course whose motto Invicta meaning unconquerable was taken from the original Kent County Crest in England. Although not entirely truly unconquerable the challenging European – Scottish Links course designed by the late Mike Strantz will certainly put up a good fight and left a lasting impression on many of the field. It was a warm welcome to the Tour for 12 new tour members who were playing in their 1st Tour event. While playing from the shorter front tees many were able to collect birdies and build their confidence for their upcoming Major at Viniterra .Collectively the group was able to card 40 birdies and 2 eagles.
2011 Senior Amateur Tour National Champion Jim Gallagher from Yorktown was the lone competitor in the Championship Flight but used 3 birdies to turn in a 77 for his 1st win on Tour this season.
In the A Flight Tim Matthews also from Yorktown; playing in his 1st Senior Am Tour tournament also carded a 77 for the win without the aid of any birdies. Larry Maitland carded 3 birdies in route to his 80 second place finish and a closest to the flag award.
Bob Weaver; who was just promoted up into the B Flight following his last tournament continued his winning ways in his new flight as he gathered 3 birdies on his way to a 79 and 1st place finish. Weaver also brought home the closest to the flag award for the B & C flight. Two players finished with identical scores of 81 for 2nd & 3rd place with Monroe Preston taking 2nd after a match of cards over new comer Whip Wilson.
There was quite a battle in the C Flight with only 13 strokes separating the top spot from the bottom. C Flight players also collected 16 birdies and an eagle during play today. David Davis from Martinsville was able to record his 5th win in 2 seasons on the Tour and his 1st of the season with his 86 finish. In 2nd place with an 88 was Tour newbie Ed Harris from Emporia. Jim Goforth claimed the 3rd place prize with an 89. The Tours next stop will be its 2nd Major of the season at Viniterra.
