Piedmont Virginia Seniors Close Inaugural Season in Blustery Winds At Hunting Hills Country Club
Roanoke, VA
November 1,
2012
After rescheduling the tournament due to the
effects of Hurricane Sandy last Tuesday; only 7 seniors came out dressed more
for snow skiing than for golf; to compete in their final regular season
tournament today at Hunting Hills Country Club. They all took on the
challenging hilly layout of the beautiful course which saw its fairways
narrowed greatly by the fallen leaves on a cloudy, windy, cold day. Only Keith
Myers who was playing his home course was able to record a score in the 70’s.
Myer’s 79 was good enough not only to gain him his 7th tour victory
in the Championship Flight this season but also allowed him to win both the
Season Championship Flight Title as well as the Tours Overall Points
Championship Trophy with 5,645 total tour points. Myers now has his sights set
on winning the National Championship which is only 12 days away.
There were no A Flight participants in today’s
tournament; which left current flight leader Jim Gaddy from Lynchburg with the
A Flight Season Championship. Gaddy finished the season with 5 first place
finishes and 5,175 season tour points.
Today’s tournament was needed to decide the B
Flight Championship as the top 3 place finishers entered todays round with only
400 points separating 1st from 3rd place with 450 points
up for grabs by winner. Bill Knarr from Verona began the round leading by 75pts
over Sam Moser from South Boston and 400 points ahead of Raymond Rice from
Hurt. Knarr wasted no time jumping off to a 5 stroke lead over Moser and a 4
stroke lead over Rice after the first 5 holes. Knarr then held on to finish
with an 86 to Rice’s 89 and Moser’s 95; giving him his third straight Tour win.
With the win came the 450 tour points he needed to win the season B Flight
Championship with 4,875 points. Knarr was the Tours only member to play in all
17 season tournaments.
Tim Stirling from Huddleston entered todays
round with C Flight’s Championship already in his possession and only 143
points behind Championship Flight leader Keith Myers for the Overall Tour
Points Championship. With Myers collecting 450 points today for his 1st
place finish it left Stirling only hope of winning his flight and adding to his
points lead in the C Flight. But fellow Huddleston resident, Bart Truesdell had
other thoughts. Truesdell saw it as an opportunity to close the gap between him
and flight leader Stirling. Truesdell narrowly edged Stirling out by a single
stroke on the last hole to give him a 99 to Stirling’s 100; for his 3rd
win of the season. Stirling won the season C Flight Championship with 5,326
season tour points; with Truesdell finishing 2nd for the season with
4,480 points. Tour Director Kenny Powell who shot 103 today finished the season
in 4th place in the C Flight with 2,545 points.
All season Flight Champions will receive a
free 2013 Tour Membership for their accomplishments and the Tours Overall
Season Points Champion Keith Myers will also receive the Tour Championship
Trophy at the upcoming National Finals. All 7 of today’s participants as well
as 18 others will be heading to Pinehurst to compete as individuals and to
represent the Piedmont Virginia Tour in National Finals November 13th
& 14th.
