Piedmont Virginia Seniors vs Ivy Hills Golf Club

Forest, VA
Ivy Hills Golf Club Humbles Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateurs
Ivy Hills Golf Club in Forest lived up to its reputation today as only two of the Tours group were even able to record scores in the 80’s. This had only been done on 2 other occasions in the Tours 2 year history. It occurred at the elevated layout at Devil’s Knob and in the rain at King Carter. The scenic views and dramatic elevation changes here today both combined to take your breath away and place a high premium on precise shot making with every club in your bag.
Raymond Rice from Hurt and playing in the B Flight led all scorers today with an 80. It was Rice’s first tournament on Tour since July 9th as he has been traveling and played in the World Amateur Handicap Tournament in Myrtle Beach. The win gave Raymond his 3rd Tour Win of the season in just 8 tournaments entered. Another B Flight player Bill Knarr from Verona recorded the other round in the 80’s today finishing with an 85 for 2nd place. With the points received for his 2nd place finish Knarr moved into 1st place in the Tours Overall Season Points Standings by 51 points over Tour Director Kenny Powell with just 2 tournaments to go.
The A Flight participants; all of whom are accustomed to rounds in the 70’s succumbed to the course today with season high rounds in the 90’s. Rusty Ward from Hopewell was able to card a birdie on #13 which enabled him to pull out the win for his 5th win of the season while carding a 91. Flight leader Larry Maitland finished with a 94. Ward who trailed Maitland by 162 points going into today’s match now holds a 13 point lead as the season nears an end.
In the C Flight all 5 participants had an opportunity to claim the top spot coming down the stretch. Many missed 2-3 foot putts and other scoring opportunities went by before Gary Hines from Virginia Beach made a birdie on #17 to claim the victory. Hines who finished with a 91 claimed his 1st Tour victory in only his 2nd Tour start of the year. David Davis from Martinsville finished 2nd on a match of cards with a 93. Jerry Bryan who also had a 93 claimed 3rd.
The Tours next stop will be in Suffolk at Sleepy Hole Golf Club on Wednesday October 23rd beginning at 10am. Entry fee is $65 with registration deadline of October 21st. Only 2 tournaments remain before National Finals in Pinehurst November 12 & 13th. Online registration & payment required for Nationals by November 1st. register at www.senioramateurgolftour.net

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #218 Concerning the relief associated with Ground Under Repair, R25-1, read the following statements and decide True or False: A. When I determine the nearest point of relief, that point must afford both swing and stance relief from the GUR before dropping. B. For a ball that lies through the green, I must drop the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief. Though the nearest point of relief may not be on a putting green, I could drop on a putting green if it lies within one club-length of that point, provided it was no closer to the hole. C. For a ball that lies on the green, I must place the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. D. For a ball that lies in a bunker, I may, under penalty of one stroke, drop the ball outside the bunker within one club-length of the bunker, no closer to the hole.
Answer A is TRUE. When you take relief, you establish the nearest point of relief. By definition, that point must be free of any interference with the condition. When you combine that with the specifics from R25-1, you see that interference includes both with the stroke or stance. If the player’s ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if the Abnormal Ground Condition (GUR, in this case), which must also be on the green, intervenes with the line of putt. B is FALSE. If the ball is not on the putting green to begin with, the ball must not be dropped nor placed upon the putting green when taking relief. Also, if it came to rest on the putting green it would need to be re-dropped. R25-1, b, (i). C is FALSE. Most players don’t realize that when taking relief on a putting green, you do not get the one club-length tagged on to the Nearest Point of Relief. Read R25-1,b, (iii) carefully. When taking relief from an Abnormal Ground Condition with your ball on the putting green, you place the ball AT the nearest point of relief. D is FALSE. The point at which I drop may well be within one club-length of the bunker, but it must be on a line that is anchored by the hole and goes through the original position of my ball as it lay in the bunker. I can go back on that line, behind the bunker, as far as I wish. See R25-1,b, (ii), (b). |
