Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateurs Reach Peak at Devil's Knob-Wintergreen
Wintergreen, VA
August 21, 2012
Both
course conditions and weather today were nearly perfect at Devil’s Knob Golf
Club at Wintergreen Resort for the 12th tournament of the Piedmont
Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tours season. The Ellis Maples designed course,
the highest golf course in Virginia; sitting at an elevation of over 3,800 feet
left the participants remembering narrow fairways, excellent turf conditions,
75 degree temperatures, and multi- level breaking greens. Although quite a golf
challenge almost 1/3 of today’s field was able to score in the 70’s. All
players agreed that this was one of the most enjoyable venues of their
schedule.
Tim
Chocklett from Vinton rebounded from his 4th place finish at the
last tournament to once again find his way to a first place finish. His 76 gave
him a one stroke victory for his 4th win of the season in the
Championship Flight. Terry Towler from Dillwyn finished 2nd with his
77 and Keith Myers from Roanoke took 3rd carding a 79.
The A
Flight turned in two of the lowest scores of the day with matching 74’s forcing
a sudden death playoff to decide the winner. The playoff was decided on the
difficult 1st hole with Jim Gaddy from Lynchburg scoring a par as
Larry Maitland from Stony Creek could only manage a bogey on the hole. This
gave Gaddy his 4th win of the season also.
The B
Flight was also decided by a playoff as Sam Moser and Irving Carter both from
South Boston turned in matching 85’s in regulation. Their playoff also was
decided on #1 with Carter picking up his first win of the season after 4 third
place finishes with a par. Moser
finished 2nd with his bogey on the playoff hole.
The
entire C Flight fell victim to the narrow fairways and breaking greens as Tim
Stirlings 93 was the flights best score. This was the 5th time this
season Stirling from Huddleston has topped his flight. Feeling he had played
very poorly all day Stirling admitted he did not feel very much like a winner.
Once again Danny Wright from Big Island fell only a stroke away from victory
with his 94.
The
Tour takes an extra week break in action due to Labor Day Holiday with its next
tournament scheduled for Monday,
September 10th at Danville Golf Club. Registration deadline for this
event is Tuesday, September 4th, with entry fee being $65. Sign-up
