Temperatures
in the low 80’s on a sunny day, coupled with a great golf course in excellent
condition led the way to some very strong competition at Stoney Creek Golf Club
of Wintergreen Resort today. This was the 1st of 4 ‘Majors’ that the
Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Tour will run for its members this year.
In the
Championship Flight; Keith Myers of Roanoke won his 3rd tournament
in a row. His previous 2 victories came while he was competing in the A flight.
This was his first tournament since his promotion up into the Championship
Flight. He proved immediately that he was ready for this promotion. It was not
an easy task as it took a birdie on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to
seal this win. Phillip Clay of Evington; had birdied 3 of his last nine holes
of regulation to force the playoff with a 76 tie with Myers. The #1 hole had
given up no birdies and only 4 pars all day. After both players had hit long
straight drives and reached the green in regulation; Clay 2 putted for par as
Myers sank his 4’ birdie putt for the win.
Frankie
Smith of Lynchburg came from 2 strokes back making the turn to shoot a 76;
beating out a fellow Lynchburg native Jim Gaddy by a single stroke in A Flight
action. The two reversed their scores and positions from their last tournament
at London Downs keeping their competition fierce.
The B
Flight was captured by a very consistent Raymond Rice of Hurt with a 82. 3
golfers finished tied for second with 87’s. After matching of cards; Wayne
Crupi of Alexandria took 2nd while newcomer Irving Carter and Sammie
Moser both from South Boston finished 3rd and 4th.
C
Flight saw Bart Truesdell of Huddleston edge out another Huddleston participant
Chauncy Drewry by 2 strokes; 96 to 98 for his second victory in a row.
“ Being
a ‘Major Championship’ means that every one of the 4 Flight winners today ‘
punched their qualification ticket’ to the year ending National Tour
Championship that will be held in Pinehurst in November. That event is slated
to draw the Top 300 Tour members from the 13 Tours that stretch up and down the
East Coast”, said Tour Director Kenny Powell.
The
Senior Amateur Tour has next week off for Memorial Day and will resume play on Tuesday
June 5th at Olde Mill in Laurel Fork. There are openings left for
that event. Sign-up by May 29th. at www.senioramateurgolftour.net Piedmont Va link.
