3 More Seniors Collect their Tickets to National Finals with Wins at The Manor Resort

The Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur
Golf Tour held its 2nd MAJOR Event of the season today at The Manor
Resort. Automatic qualification to the National Finals was up for grabs to all
flight winners as well as double points to all participants. Under overcast skies,
a brief shower, and cooler temperatures; the action was fierce in all 4
flights. The largest margin of victory in any of the flights was 2 strokes;
with 2 of the flights being decided by a single stroke.
In the Championship Flight it was
Tim Chocklett of Vinton who picked up his ticket by winning his 2nd
tournament of the season with a solid round of 75. 2 strokes back in 2nd
place was Barry Shea of Danville who shot a 77.
Fellow Lynchburg golfers Frankie
Smith Sr. and Jim Gaddy continued their season long battle for first place in
the A Flight. Gaddy, who is narrowly hanging on to the flights points lead
having won 2 previous tournaments this season; once again came up 1 stroke
short in the qualification event recording a 79. In both Majors the single
stroke victories have gone to Smith who is holding on tightly to his National
qualification with the 2 MAJOR titles in hand. Smith used a par on the 10th
hole coming down the stretch as Gaddy bogied to hang on for the win with his
78.
In B Flight action Sam Moser of
South Boston punched his ticket also with his best round in 7 starts using 2
birdies to card a 76. Moser’s prior best finish had been in the last tournament
in which he recorded an 85. Finishing 2nd with a 78 was Raymond Rice
of Hurt; who also recorded his best round of the season . Rice had already
received a qualification as a prior winner in the 1st MAJOR.
Going into today’s event Tim
Stirling of Huddleston trailed in the C Flight points standings by a mire 260
points. Stirling used his drive for the points lead to propel him to his 4th
victory of the season. Stirling’s 87 was good enough to earn him not only the
flights point standings lead but also the qualification berth. Walt Renton of
Crossville,Tenn. once again came in secord place carding a 88. It was the
traveling Renton’s 3rd tournament; the first 2 finishes being sudden
death playoffs for 1st place ties all of which he came up a stroke
short of winning.
The Tours next tournament will be
held at 10:00am , July 24th at Birdwood Golf Club in
Charlottesville. Entry fee is $65 with pre-registration required by July 17,
2012.
