Tuesday October 7, 2014

Martinsville, VA

The Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur traveled to Martinsville for its 17th tournament of the season at Chatmoss Country Club today. They found the course to be quite a challenging layout as it only gave up 5 birdies all day to the field. The weather was a slightly overcast 76 degree day with the course being a little soggy in spots from sprinklers and light rain prior to the start of the tournament on the newly over seeded tract .

With no Championship Flight players present for the match Tom Carbone; a visiting Tour player from the Charlotte, NC Tour led all scoring today with a 78 in the A Flight. It was Carbone’s 3 win of the season as a visiting player on the Virginia Tour having victories at Draper Valley and Stoney Creek earlier this year also. Carbone who rarely participates in the optional Skins missed collecting in his last tournament when he carded 2 birdies so he decided to participate this time. Tom stated following the round that he was not complaining about his score or finish but that since signing up for skins game today that he had missed 4 easy birdie attempts from 4 foot or less. Virginia’s current points leader Rusty Ward captured 2nd place in the flight three strokes back with an 81. Ward was tied with Carbone back and forth through 11 holes before carding a triple bogie while Carbone made par on the 485 yard par five 12th hole for the winning margin.

The B Flight season championship race continued to remain up for grabs with 2 tournaments remaining as Bob Nolte from Forest collected his 1st Tour Victory with a score of 83. Nolte birdied number 9 and number 18 to win in the skins game also. It was Bob’s best showing of the year having finished no better than 5th in his previous 4 tournaments. B Flights current leader Bill Knarr held on to a slim lead in the flight with his 2nd place finish at 87.

C Flight was led from start to finish today from Martinsville native and 2013 C Flight National Champion David Davis. Davis carded a birdie on his 5th hole to start a run of pars and finished the front nine with a 4 over par 40 which was 6 strokes ahead of his closest competitor in the flight. Davis finished with a score of 82 for his 3rd win of the season. In 2nd place was the flights current leader Kenny Powell with a 94. With only 2 more tournaments and a paid ticket to National Finals up for grabs Powell now hangs on to a 392 point lead over Roy Hodges who finished a single stroke behind at 95 today for 3rd place.

The Tour next travels to Suffolk to play at Sleepy Hole Golf Club on Tuesday October 21st. Registration is required by Wednesday October 15th.

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

 Question:

Sean has hit his tee ball into a lateral water hazard. After a brief search and not finding his ball, he estimates the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and properly drops a ball in accordance with R26-1c. Before he makes a stroke at this ball, a fellow competitor finds a ball about twenty yards closer to the hole, in the hazard. It is identified as Sean’s original ball. Sean lifts the ball he just dropped, and goes to where his original ball lay. He retrieves his ball from the hazard and, keeping the estimated point of entry into the hazard between him and the hole, retreats about four paces and drops the ball. He then hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to hole out.

In stroke play, what is Sean’s score for the hole?

A. 4
B. 5
C. 7
D. Sean might be DQed.

Answer

B. 5. Sean has proceeded correctly. Initially, he estimates the spot where he believes his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. This estimate was the result of viewing his ball flight from the tee. After he dropped a ball in accordance with R26-1c, but before he made a stroke at the ball, facts made it clear he had dropped in a wrong place. He correctly lifted the ball as per Rule 20-6, Lifting Ball Incorrectly Substituted, Dropped or Placed. He then again dropped a ball in accordance with R26-1c.

It is important to note because he had correct substituted a ball based upon the facts at the time, had Sean’s original ball, once found, been playable from the hazard, Sean could not have played that original ball as it lies. Since he had already taken action to substitute a ball under a Rule (R26-1), he must continue to play out the hole under the provisions of that Rule. The only thing he could have done, once he realized he had chosen a wrong point on the hazard margin for his reference point, was to change which option from Rule 26-1 he would employ’ i.e., he could have used the “flag line” instead of two club-lengths.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

National Finals will again be in Pinehurst ( Last year there- Hilton Head next year) November 10-12th with Skins Game on November 10th at Pinehurst #9 ( National Golf Club ) Other courses used this year will be Pinehurst #9, Pine Wild ( Holly Courses), Seven Lakes, and Legacy. More information will be posted later on Senior Amateur Tour main web-site.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness)

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
