UVA's Birdwood Course Brings Out Repeat Winners
Day of 3rds for 3 of 4
Flights in Senior Amateur Golf Tournament
Charlottesville,
VA
July 24,
2012
Today was truly a day of 3rds at
Birdwood Golf Club of UVA in Charlottesville for the Piedmont Virginia Senior
Amateur Golf Tour. 3 of the 4 flights today were won by 3 time season winners;
2 of which used 3 birdies in their rounds to achieve this task; and all three
of them taking over 1st place in their flights point standings.
In the Championship Flight it was
Tim Chocklett of Vinton picking up his 3rd season victory and second
in a row with his round of 76. This victory kept Tim in the top spot in season
point standings for the flight by 360 points over 2nd place finisher
Keith Myers of Roanoke; who finished with an 80.
The A Flight also saw Jim Gaddy of
Lynchburg collect his 3rd victory shooting an impressive 76; using a
3 birdie attack which began on the 9th hole and continued on the 10th
and 18th holes. Gaddy entered today’s tournament only 10 points
behind Flight leader Frankie Smith; also from Lynchburg who today finished 2nd
with an 80. With today’s win Gaddy once again took the points lead going into the
3rd MAJOR of the season.
Rounding out the 3rd victory
winners of the day was Wayne Crupi of Alexandria; who in the B Flight recorded
a round of 77; matching his season best for his 3rd win of the
season. Wayne also used a 3 birdie attack; all of which came on his front 9; to
hold off 2nd place finisher Sam Moser of South Boston by a single
stroke. Moser who won in his last tournament carded a 78. With the victory; Crupi;
who has not missed playing in a tournament all season took over the points lead
in the B Flight .
The C Flight was the only flight won
by someone other than a 3 time winner. Tour Director Kenny Powell of Danville;
playing in only his 4th tournament all season tied his best score of
the season shooting a 89 to force a sudden death shootout for 1st
place with Danny Wright of Big Island. With a thunderstorm quickly heading
their way; Powell said to Wright on the way to the tee box for #1 , “ If one of
us does not win outright on this first playoff hole, I am going to concede the
1st place finish to you so we can finish before the storm reaches
us.” Powell however did not have to concede the victory as Wrights attempt for
a tie on the hole stopped 4” short allowing Powell to take home his 1st
season win.
The Tours next stop will be its 3rd
MAJOR Tournament of the season which is being held at the Pete Dye River Course
of Virginia Tech at Radford on August 7th beginning at 10:00am.
