Small Field with Large Competition at Pulaski Country Club

Pulaski, Va.

October 16, 2012

Only 6 players showed up on a cool fall morning at Pulaski Country Club for the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur tournament this morning. Although a little cool to start it soon warmed up as did the competition; making for a very enjoyable time for all.

The Championship flight saw John Sutton from Pilot and Mark Wade from Charlottesville battle for the first place finish throughout the entire round.  Wade took a 2 stroke lead over Sutton when he birdied the 4th hole; but Sutton soon closed the gap back to a single stroke with a birdie of his own on # 8. Wade held on to his single stroke advantage until  the 14th hole when Sutton tied the score with a par as Wade settled for a bogie. The score remained even until the final hole when according to Wade, “John hit 2 perfect shots right down the middle on the sloping par 5 finishing hole; therefore really putting the pressure on me.” Wade went on to record a par on the hole but Suttonfinished the hole  just as strong as he had started;  carding a birdie for the single stroke victory. Sutton  finished with a 76 as Wade finished at 77. It was Sutton’s 2nd win of the season; having also won the Major just up the road at the Pete Dye River Course in August.

There were no A flight players participating in today’s tournament but in the B Flight Bill Knarr from Verona picked up his second win in a row with his 84 finish. Knarr; who is the only player on the Tour who has not missed a tournament all season will move into the points lead in B Flight with the 450 points he receives for today’s win. He now leads the flight with only 1 tournament remaining by 75 points.

In the C Flight Derek Latham from Sherrill’s Ford, NC ; a Charlotte Tour member  collected his 2nd win of the year .Latham began the day with a birdie on the first hole ; and was able to steadily add to his lead over Tour Director Kenny Powell for a 14 stroke margin of victory . Latham finished with an 85 and also collected the closest to the pin prize in his first ever appearance on the Piedmont Virginia Tour. Tour Director Powell said” I have a feeling we will see him back again in an effort to take our prize back to North Carolina”.

The Piedmont Virginia Tour will have their final tournament of their inaugural season Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Hunting Hills Country Club in Roanoke. It is scheduled for a 10:00am shotgun start and the cost is $65 to enter. Registration is due by October 23, 2012.
