Piedmont Virginia Seniors Post Record Low Scores at Draper Valley Major
Draper, VA
July 23, 2014
A
“Golfer-friendly” yet challenging layout with wide open fairways in the
Virginia Mountains make Draper Valley Golf Club a great place to play and score
well. Today was certainly no exception as twenty Piedmont Virginia Senior
Amateur Golf Tour golfers found out as they gathered for their 2nd
Major of the season here today. The course gave up thirty-two birdies to the
field today with the three Championship Flight players carding fourteen of them
for record low rounds.
Tim Chocklett; a
charter Tour member from Vinton led the way in the Championship Flight as he
began his day with a birdie on his opening hole. It was one of six he was to
make on his way to posting a four under par 68.The 68 is the Tours lowest round
in its three year existence. Fellow friend and Hunting Hills Country Club
member Keith Myers made a gallant charge by making five birdies of his own in
his 2nd place even par 72 round. Chocklett however was not to be
denied his first Tour victory of the season and the automatic invitation to the
National Finals as he birdied five of his last seven holes to secure the top
spot.
Tom Carbone from
Mooresville,NC who normally plays on the Charlotte Tour made a guest appearance
and claimed the Virginia Tours top spot in the A Flight with a score of 76. Carbone
was paired with the three Championship guys for play which could have been a
little intimidating considering their fourteen birdies; but he birdied #1 and
went on to shoot a solid four over par round.Yorktown’s Tim Matthews claimed 2nd
place with an 80.
In the B Flight 73
year old Raymond Rice from Hurt was able to shoot his age turning in a 73 for
his 2nd Tour win in a row and his 3rd of the season. Rice
used three birdies to give him the two stoke win over George Russell who
finished 2nd with a score of 75.
C- Flight saw Tour
Director Kenny Powell from Danville make a birdie on the ninth hole and sink a
ten foot par putt on the eighteenth to capture a single stroke win over current
National Champion David Davis. Powell turned in his lowest Tour score of the
season with an 84 giving him his 3rd Tour win of the season. Davis
slipped into 2nd place a mere stroke behind with his bogie on #18.
All Flight winners
received automatic invitations to participate in the National Senior Amateur
Finals in Pinehurst NC in November. The Tours Season Points Championship race
also tightened up greatly with the double points awarded to all participants
today. As they crossed the seasons midway point Rusty Ward still leads with
3675 points. Very close behind are Kenny Powell with 3325, Jerry Delbridge with
2895, Bill Knarr with 2888, Roy Hodges with 2765, and George Russell with 2670.
A yearly Black Card membership to Planet Fitness and a nice trophy is up for
grabs to the Tours season point’s champion.
The Tour returns
to action next Tuesday July 29th at 10am in Amherst at Poplar Grove
Golf Club. Entry fee is $70 with registration required by Friday July 25th.

Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules
scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's
the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with
you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the
answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use
your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules
of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions =============================================================== |
Question ? Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow
stakes. He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side
bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side
of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard. He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a
steep slope. After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot
away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time. Nate
then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water. Nate moves back about four yards into the fairway, keeping
the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot
between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft
turf. When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor
tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the
flag. So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2
yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white
line. Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops. This time the ball
remains where it was dropped. He hits this ball onto the green and
takes two putts to complete the play of the hole. In stroke play, how many penalty strokes
did Nate just incur? A. 4 B. 6 C. 7 D. 9 =============================================== Answer: C. 7 1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2penalty
strokes. 2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach
of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same
Rule, related acts, single penalty. This could also be construed as
testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered
related acts and single breach. See Decision 1-4/12) 3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = 1 penalty
stroke. 4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded
= 2 penalty strokes. When he first dropped the ball,
it was in play. He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of
the relief procedure from R26-1. He is taking relief for an embedded
ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come
up. When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place
(R20-7). Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25. I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use
the DZ as intended. Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than
part of the area through the green. When he dropped the ball in this
area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2. Thus when the ball rolled closer
to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c). So
what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was
probably doing it for the wrong reason. If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a
Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course. The special
dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is
dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to
that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.) Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole |
Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings
Race?
There are only two ways to get to the year ending National
Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners
in your flight.
As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only
the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and
depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate
in during 2014.
Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what
place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your
automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour
uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in
harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or
severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into
playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the
start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that
to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event,
because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course
if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a
cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to
show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
