Jim Gallagher led Tidewater Attack with Another Sub Par Win

Tidewater Players Sweep Piedmont Virginia's 1st Major at Cedar Point

Wednesday May 14, 2014

Suffolk, VA

24 Senior Amateurs eagerly arrived at Cedar Point Country Club this morning to compete in the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour’s first Major of the season. They quickly found the course which hosted the 2009 Virginia State Amateur Championships to be truly one of the Premier sites in the State or maybe even country. It’s immaculately maintained condition and courteous staff coupled with perfect weather made it a golfer’s dream day. Jim Gallagher a Championship Flight player stated following his five birdie performance, “the greens rolled so fast and true that all you had to do was get them started to the hole.” “We could not have had a better course or day for our Major “, stated Tour Director Powell.

The Championship Flight saw 2011 National Champion Jim Gallagher from Yorktown paired up with the current National Champion Ron Sullins also from Yorktown, and Tip Wight from Arlington. The three competitors know each other well and savored the opportunity to compete against each other again. Gallagher quickly grabbed the lead by making one of his five birdies for the day on the 1st hole as Wight scored a bogey and Sullins carded his only double bogey of the day. Gallagher made the turn with an even par 36 while Wight and Sullins went 38 and 39. Sullins made a charge at the leader with 2 birdies and an eagle for a 3 under par  score of 33 on the back nine and a daily total of even par 72. Gallagher however held off the charge by shooting 2 under on the back nine himself for a daily total of two under par 70. The win gave Gallagher his 2nd Tour victory in as many starts this season; having also won at the opener at Spring Creek this year with a sub-par 71. Wight finished  third with a 75.

The A-Flight was also a three man shootout between Doug Brandmahl, Tim Matthews, and current Tour points leader Rusty Ward. Matthews, a three time winner last season playing in his first tournament of this season; took the lead with a birdie on his 4th hole of play and never looked back. His only falter came as he triple bogied a par 3 hole with only 1 hole remaining allowing Ward to pull within a stroke. They both made par on their final hole giving Matthews the 85 to 86 win over Ward. Brandmahl finished 3rd with an 89.

B-Flight saw Robert Weaver from VA Beach come back from being two strokes down to both Jerry Delbridge and Bill Knarr  at the turn; to claim his 1st tour win of the season with an 85. Bill Knarr; bogied his final hole to finish a stroke behind at 86 for 2nd place. Jerry Delbridge and George Russell Jr. finished with 87’s to tie for 3rd .

The C-Flight which is the Tour’s largest flight is usually decided on the final hole each tournament. Staying true to form the flight’s winner was decided by a playoff for the 2nd tournament in a row. With 10 players in the flight; Roy Hodges it’s leader at the turn at 44 saw five players past him on the back nine. Meanwhile a missed 2 foot putt on the sixteenth hole cost Tour Director Powell an opportunity to join the three Tidewater area golfers in a playoff for 1st place. Mike Wren, Bill Crowley, and Chris Spanka all from VA Beach finished regulation with identical scores of 91. The three went to the par 4 first hole for their playoff. There Mike Wren , who had bogied the hole his only 2 times of ever playing it found a way to par it this time for win. Both Spanka and Crowley fell victims to bogies. Spanka collected 2nd place on a match of cards; while Crowley finished in 3rd place. The victory by Wren in the Flight made it a clean sweep for Tidewater area players having claiming the top spot in all four flights. All four Flight winners received automatic invitations to compete in the Tour’s National Finals held in Pinehurst, NC every November against the top players from all the Tours. All participants today also receive double points for their respective finishes.

The Tour next travel from the coast to the mountains as they go to Olde Mill in Laurel Fork. The tournament will be Tuesday June 3, 2014 beginning at 10:00 am. Entry fee is $70 for Tour members with registration required by Saturday May 24th. Register and pay online at www.senioramateurgolftour.net at Piedmont Virginia Tour link / schedule or send email to piedmontva@senioramateurgolftour.net.

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #249

This is a stroke play event with shop credit to those who do well. Mark’s ball lies on the green about 65 feet from the flag. Mark asks for someone to attend the flagstick, and a fellow competitor, Bill complies. Mark’s putt is a good one, it tracks directly towards the hole, has a good chance to go in and stops about 1/2 inch short. Bill tells Mark it was a great putt, and uses his foot to knock Mark’s ball away telling him “That’s good.”

Hmmm. Is it? What do you think?

A. Yes the hole is considered complete for Mark, the putt was conceded by a fellow competitor.

B. No, this is stroke play and the ball must be replaced and putted into the hole. There is no penalty.

C. When Bill kicked Mark’s putt, since he was attending the flagstick, Mark is penalized two strokes and the ball must be played as it lies. (R17-3b) Thanks a lot, Bill.

D. Bill is penalized one stroke for moving Mark’s ball in play. The ball must be replaced and putted out.

Answer:

B. There are no concessions in stroke play. You must always putt out. While Bill is officially attending the flagstick, Mark’s ball did not “strike” the attendant. The ball was at rest and moved by an outside agency (fellow competitor, Bill). As such, the ball must be replaced without penalty. No penalty to Bill. If Bill fails to hole out before he tees off on the next hole, he would be DQed.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
