3 of 4 Winners from
Last Season Repeat at The Club at Viniterra
Even with the circling bands of rainfall
the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour was able to complete their 12th
scheduled tournament of the season today at The Club at Viniterra . The course
gave up 19 birdies to the field of 21 participants today as some very good
scores were turned in. The course was in great condition and held its integrity
even after several downpours.
Leading the way today was Jim Gallagher from
Yorktown, VA who just a couple days ago returned from competing in the British
Senior Amateur Tournament held at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, Great
Britain. Gallagher finished tied for 8th out of 144 there in the 3
day event. Today playing in the Championship Flight Gallagher carded 5 birdies
on his way to tying the Tours low round record of 68. It was Jim’s 4 Tour win
in as many starts this season. For the four tournaments he has competed in this
season he is now -6 as he has shot under par in 3 of the 4. Gallagher also won
the Tours 2013 tournament held here last season. Finishing tied for 2nd
place in the Flight was the Tours current National Champion Ron Sullins and Tip
Wight ; both which finished with 79’s.
The A Flight was also captured by a
repeating winner as Rusty Ward claimed the top spot for the 2nd year
in a row with his 78 finish. Ward; who is the Tours point’s leader thus far has
won 7 of 12 tournaments entered this season. Doug Brandmahl finished second
with an 88.
Last season’s tournament winner in B Flight
here at Viniterra; Charlie Powell also made it 2 years in a row by claiming the
top spot with his 80. Powell has now won 2 of the 3 tournaments in which he has
participated in this season. Ed Gore finished 3 strokes behind at 83 for 2nd
place.
Mike Wren from Virginia Beach; although not
last season’s winner here continued his success on the Tour with an 83 finish
for the top spot in C Flight. It was Wrens 3rd start of the season
and his 2nd first place finish. Three strokes back was Chris Spanka
also from VA Beach at 86 for 2nd place.
The Tour returns to action next week with
back to back events on Tuesday and Wednesday. The first will be at The
Crossings in Glen Allen on Tuesday August 19th beginning at 10am.
The following day will be the Tours 3rd MAJOR of the season at
Colonial Heritage Golf Club in Williamsburg beginning at 10am.

Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules
scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's
the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with
you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the
answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use
your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules
of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions =============================================================== |
Question ? Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow
stakes. He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side
bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side
of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard. He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a
steep slope. After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot
away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time. Nate
then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water. Nate moves back about four yards into the fairway, keeping
the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot
between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft
turf. When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor
tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the
flag. So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2
yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white
line. Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops. This time the ball
remains where it was dropped. He hits this ball onto the green and
takes two putts to complete the play of the hole. In stroke play, how many penalty strokes
did Nate just incur? A. 4 B. 6 C. 7 D. 9 =============================================== Answer: C. 7 1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2penalty
strokes. 2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach
of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same
Rule, related acts, single penalty. This could also be construed as
testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered
related acts and single breach. See Decision 1-4/12) 3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = 1 penalty
stroke. 4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded
= 2 penalty strokes. When he first dropped the ball,
it was in play. He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of
the relief procedure from R26-1. He is taking relief for an embedded
ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come
up. When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place
(R20-7). Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25. I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use
the DZ as intended. Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than
part of the area through the green. When he dropped the ball in this
area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2. Thus when the ball rolled closer
to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c). So
what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was
probably doing it for the wrong reason. If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a
Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course. The special
dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is
dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to
that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.) Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole |
Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings
Race?
There are only two ways to get to the year ending National
Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners
in your flight.
As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only
the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and
depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate
in during 2014.
Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what
place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your
automatic invitation?
Tour Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour
uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in
harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or
severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into
playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the
start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that
to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event,
because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course
if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a
cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to
show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
