Senior Amateur Golfers ascended on Virginia Tech’s Pete Dye River Course today
to compete in their 3rd Major tournament of their season. The River
Course known to be one of the Top College courses in the country proved to be
quite a challenge for the participants trying to earn their pass to the
National finals. The surrounding New River, high waste areas, coffin bunkers,
and fast breaking greens all made their presence felt by most of the players;
as only nine were able to break the 80 mark.
In the
Championship Flight John Sutton from Pilot used his local knowledge of the
course along with his golfing skills to propel him to his pass to the Nationals
.Sutton, carded 4 birdies to shoot the best score of his Tour season recording
a 1 under par 71 and a first place finish. Not far behind with a 3 birdie
attack was Terry Towler from Dillwyn who finished 2nd with a 75; and
Keith Myers from Roanoke who also recorded a 75 finished 3rd after a
match of scorecards tie-breaker. Last tournaments winner; Tim Chocklett from
Vinton claimed 4th place this time while shooting a 79.
The A
Flight was once again dominated by Frankie Smith from Lynchburg who with his
win today has won the flight in all 3 Majors this season. Smith carded 2
birdies in route to his 2 over par 74. Tour guest Vic Hardy from Danville also
shot a 74 today which would have put him in a sudden death playoff with Smith
had he been a current Tour member. John Maddox of Rustburg claimed the 2nd
place Tour prize in the flight with his 78. Kevin Kiser from Danville was able
to take 3rd with his 79 finish.
Robert
Agee from Danville picked up his 1st win of the season and automatic
Nationals qualification by recording his season best score of 78. Agee had no
prior knowledge of the course but stated that he really liked the layout and
looked forward to returning to play it again. Sam Moser from South Boston took
2nd place with an 80; and Bill Knarr from Verona finished 3rd
with an 83 to help celebrate his birthday.
David
Davis from Martinsville claimed his 1st Major victory and 4th
Tour victory of the season by shooting a 91 in the C Flight. This win
Guarantees Davis a spot in the Nationals to be held in November at Pinehurst.
Finishing in 2nd place was Dan Morgan from Danville with a 95; while
Danny Wright from Big Island claimed 3rd with a 96.
The
Tour‘s next tournament will be at Devil’s Knob /Wintergreen Resort on Tuesday
August 21st beginning at 10:00am. The cost is $65 and registration
