Hot Action at UVA's Birdwood Course
Tuesday July 8, 2014
Charlottesville, VA
Things heated up
quickly today at Birdwood Golf Club ; home course of the Virginia Cavaliers as twenty-two
Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur golfers
gathered for their 9th tournament of the season. The 95 degree heat
combined with the nearly 6300 yard treacherous layout courtesy of Lindsay Ervin
in 1984 and Pete Dye & Associates in 2005 proved quite a challenge for the
group giving up only two rounds in the 70’s.
The Championship
Flight had current National Champion Ron Sullins paired against former 2011
National Champion Jim Gallagher. Both players are from Yorktown and know each
other quite well. Both players finished the front side with sub-par scores. Sullins
took an early lead after getting birdies on #3 and #5 while Gallagher was still
even par through 5. Gallagher closed the gap to a single stroke on the 6th
hole where his birdie was a mere ball turn away from an eagle. Sullins made the
turn with a 2 under par 34 as Gallagher was right behind at one under 35. Each
player would get another birdie on the back nine but a triple bogie on the par three
12th hole by Sullins was all Gallagher needed to take the lead for
good. Gallagher finished the day one over par with a 73 for his 3rd
win of the season in as many starts. Sullins finished two strokes back with a
75. These were the only two players who were able to break 80 today.
There was also a
very close matchup in the A Flight today as the Tours current points leader
Rusty Ward took the early lead at the turn with a 38; followed very closely by
Larry Maitland and Dean Adams at 40. Both Ward and Adams found themselves
having to card a triple bogie on the backside allowing Maitland; whose worst
score on the back was bogie to claim his 3rd victory in a row and 4th
win of the season. Maitland finished with an 80 for the day while Tim Matthews had 2
birdies in route to his 81 second place finish.
B Flight had eight
players competing for the top spot but it came down to who could stay away from
the double bogies on the back side to determine its champion. Raymond Rice, Ed
Gore, George Russell, and Bill Knarr all made the turn with identical scores of
41; but it was only Rice who would put nothing higher than bogie on his card on
the next nine holes. Rice from Hurt, VA claimed his 2nd tournament
win of the season with an 81. Both Russell and Knarr turned in scores of 82 but
Russell collected the 2nd place prize after a match of scores on the
#1 handicap hole.
Roy Hodges from
Dinwiddie claimed his 2nd season win in C Flight action with a score
of 89. Hodges had two birdies on the front nine to take a 3 stroke lead over
Don Carson and Kenny Powell at the turn. Both Carson and Powell made early
attempts to catch Hodges but both fell victim to high numbers on the closing
three holes. Carson claimed 2nd place with 91.
The Tour will hold
their 2nd MAJOR of the season next Wednesday July 23rd at
Draper Valley Golf Club. The tournament will begin at 10am and entry fee is $65
for members. Automatic qualification to National Finals will be awarded to all
flight winners and double points to all participants. Registration is required
to Kenny Powell at 434-792-3728 or piedmontva@senioramateurgolftour.net
by Wednesday July 16th.

Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. |
Question ? Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow stakes. He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard. He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a steep slope. After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time. Nate then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water. Nate moves back about four yards into the fairway, keeping the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft turf. When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the flag. So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2 yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white line. Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops. This time the ball remains where it was dropped. He hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to complete the play of the hole. In stroke play, how many penalty strokes did Nate just incur? A. 4 B. 6 C. 7 D. 9 =============================================== Answer: C. 7 1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2penalty strokes. 2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same Rule, related acts, single penalty. This could also be construed as testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered related acts and single breach. See Decision 1-4/12) 3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = 1 penalty stroke. 4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded = 2 penalty strokes. When he first dropped the ball, it was in play. He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of the relief procedure from R26-1. He is taking relief for an embedded ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come up. When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place (R20-7). Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25. I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use the DZ as intended. Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than part of the area through the green. When he dropped the ball in this area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2. Thus when the ball rolled closer to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c). So what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was probably doing it for the wrong reason. If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course. The special dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.) Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole |
Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?
There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.
As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.
Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
