SENIOR TOUR ROOKIES CASH IN AT BRYAN PARK
Browns Summit, NC
(June 5, 2014) - Burlington's Gary Roberson was no stranger to the
winner's circle on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour, having won the Championship
Flight before. He followed up a first round 72 with a 76 today at Bryan
Park, The Champions Course, for a 148 two-day total and a 1-shot win over
Pinehurst's Arch Reed. Roberson was unique in that he was the only winner
in four flights to have tasted victory before "on-Tour".
Long hitting Ron Brady
of McLeansville took the top spot for the first time in the A Flight with a
152 total. Like Roberson, he won by the slimmest of margins over
Charlotte's Steve Romito who carded a 153. The B Flight was even closer than
that as Parker Whitt of Winston-Salem, also competing in his first year on the
Senior Tour, had to go 2 extra holes in a sudden-death playoff to defeat
Clemmons' Larry White after both posted regulation 2-day scores of 153. When
asked, Whitt said "Yep - this is my first Tour win". Whitt
actually had to overcome a strong first day deficit coming from 7 strokes back
with a closing round of even-par 72.
In the C Flight Patrick
Warren had the luxury of a 5 stroke lead after the first day's play firing an
incredible 76. The reason it was incredible was that Warren entered the
event with a Tour handicap of 15.3, had broken 90 only twice in 9 Tour events,
and had yet to win "on-Tour". He finished with a very strong 81
for an 8 stroke advantage over High Point's Richard Hartley and Mocksville's
Mark Denton.
"When I started on
this Tour, I told my wife I wanted to move up", said Warren.
"It'll be OK for me to do that now. I'm ready to go to the B
Flight".
The Tour is taking next
week off with no event scheduled. Play will resume June 19 at Stoney
Creek Golf Club. There are openings available for that event.
