Bryan Park Golf - 4 Stars by Golf Digest Both courses were recently awarded the prestigious 4-Star ranking in Golf Digest's Best Places to Play Guide.Be prepared for a great Tournament experience as you get a chance to play both courses this week over Wednesday and Thursday. The Champions course was runner-up for the Golf Digest's Best New Course in America Award in 1990 and voted one of the best sites not to have hosted the US OPEN. There’s not much to say about these venues – They are great courses to play and will be part f your favorites if you’ve never played them before. The Champions Course opened in 1990 by the legendary Rees Jones. Therefore be warned, it can become a real skill challenge! It is a big time course that is always looked at and most times selected for competitive rounds to separate the real golfer from the pretenders. This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend. The Players Course opened in 1974. Originally designed by George Cobb, the course was later modified by Rees Jones. Do not be lulled asleep by Bryan Park Players Course. Be warned, the Players Course will get you if you fail to execute any shot correctly. Expect your peers to have already signed-up. You know the drill - to sign-up call Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or email him at behgolf@aol.com. |

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold" Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them! Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind! Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly. It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons) It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!). It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

=============================================================== SOGGY VICTORS GO LOW IN SENIOR AMATEUR EVENT Carthage, NC June 6, 2013 The weather report wasn't good, but unfortunately, it was accurate. 92 Tour members teed it up today at Little River Resort for a scheduled Senior Amateur Golf Tour event. Light rains greeted the players from the outset and got worse as the group had finished 9 holes, causing event officials to pull the golfers from the course due to standing water on the greens. After a wait of approximately 45 minutes, players were called back to the course to finish their rounds. 62 intrepid golfers answered that call and resumed play. Despite the unfriendly conditions, a number of players in each flight were able to post very impressive scores. Heading up that group was Zebulon's Gus Alford, who fired a 1-under 71 to top all A Flight competitors. He was 4 strokes clear of a trio of players - Tour newcomer Hugh Beckwith of West End, playing in his first Tour event, and Tour veterans Dexter Barbee of Burlington and Zebulon's Dale Casey. The B Flight saw Durham's Neil Bleau make it two Tour wins in-a-row, as the only B Flight member to break 80 with a 78. Bleau's effort was remarkable considering that he played in this very same event last year and posted a 99. Smithfield's Randy Robbins and Charles Smith of Durham were 2nd and 3rd respectively with an 82 and 83. Sophia's Dennis Bryant garnered the biggest prize of the event with his C Flight win after posting an 85. Two other C Flight players were able to break that magic "90 barrier", as Greensboro's Mike Hunter shot an 88 and Dick Schuler of Pittsboro logged an 89. Multiple Tour event winner Ron Hockensmith of Whispering Pines continued his fine Championship Flight play this year with a 74 that edged Durham's Eric Ardery by a single shot. Raleigh's Rick LaFata, Pinehurst's Steve DeBolt, and High Point's Joey Moffitt all finished with 78s. The next Senior Amateur Tour stop is a 2-day event to be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro on June 12 and 13. There are a few spots still available for that tournament. THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR LITTLE RIVER RESORT EVENT TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (6222 yds) Ron Hockensmith, Whispering Pines 74 Eric Ardery, Durham 75 Rick LaFata, Raleigh 78 Joey Moffit, High Point 78 Steve DeBolt, Pinehurst 78 A FLIGHT (6222 yds) Gus Alford, Zebulon 71 Dexter Barbee, Burlington 75 Dale Casey, Zebulon 75 Hugh Beckwith, West End 75 Randy Bunn, Zebulon 76 B FLIGHT (6222 yds) Neil Bleau, Durham 78 Randy Robbins, Smithfield 82 Charles Smith, Durham 83 James Dockery, Southern Pines 86 Harry Mosher, Knightdale 87 C FLIGHT (6222 yds) Dennis Bryant, Sophia 85 Mike Hunter, Greensboro 88 Dick Schuler, Pittsboro 89 Richard Hartley, High Point 90 Elby Hatfield, Archdale 90 Doug Harvey, Knightdale 90 |

=============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. Questions from week #203 What do you think? a. Andy’s ball is in a bunker mostly covered by leaves. He can see the ball as viewed standing behind the ball, but it is not visible after taking his stance. Andy adjusts the leaves such that he can make out his ball after taking his stance...permitted or not permitted? b. Ben’s ball is believed to be in shallow murky water in a water hazard. In probing Ben accidentally moves his ball. If Ben decides to play the ball, he is assessed a 1-stroke penalty for moving his ball in play...correct or incorrect? c. Craig finds a ball in the rough that he believes is his but he cannot see his identifying mark. Without moving the ball relative to its at rest position, Craig rotates it enough to see his identifying mark. This is permitted under the Rules...sure is, or, no way? d. Danny boy thinks he has hit his tee ball into a large Pampas Grass clump. He gingerly moves the grasses around. He sees a ball and dives in to retrieve it. In his eagerness to retrieve the ball it moves downwards further into the clump. At last, he grabs it, discovers it is his and then tells his fellow competitors he is declaring this ball unplayable. He takes relief under R28b, dropping well behind the clump of grass, but keeping the original spot of the ball between him and the hole. His next stroke will be his third...um, yeah; or, nope, his 4th? Answers a. Not permitted. First sentence in R12-1, Seeing Ball; Searching for Ball: A player is not necessarily entitled to see his ball when making a stroke. Then, you need to dig a littler deeper into the Rule, specifically the wording in paragraph b. Here we find more guidance for a ball in a hazard covered by loose impediments. Finally, for our specific case you should read D12-1/3. A player is not permitted to remove leaves provided his ball is visible from some angle, unfortunately just not from the address position. b. Incorrect, no penalty assessed to this point. Without penalty, Ben is permitted to search for a ball that lies in water inside a water hazard. If he moves the ball and he intends to play it, it must be replaced. Otherwise he may lift and proceed under R26-1. (R12-1c) c. No way!. The player has a specific procedure he must follow to identify his ball in play. He must: Announce, Permit observation, Mark, No cleaning, Replace. (R12-2) Craig incurred a 1-stroke penalty for rotating his ball in this manner. d. Nope, his 4th. Danny’s ball, as it lay in the grass clump is in play. When he first sees a ball, he should think about not allowing this ball to move during the search to identify it. If he considers he will probably declare it unplayable, he should announce this intention ahead of time. That way, if the ball subsequently moves, there is no penalty. Additionally, if he thinks he might try to play it, but needs to ID it first, he should come up with a way to first mark the position of the ball so that he can correctly replace it if it does move. We cannot just dive headlong into the bush with no regard for our actions. This same thought process should be used when searching for a ball inside a water hazard but not in water. (R12-1, R12-2, R18-2a, R28) =============================================================== |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
