2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR AUGUST 8, 2013 GRANDOVER RESORT (WEST COURSE) ----- |
Grandover Resort - West Course Don’t miss playing this beautiful course in Greensboro. Grandover is always in pristine condition, is a great course to play and one that can challenge you if you don't keep it in the fairway. It was designed on rolling terrain in 1997. The course is lined with towering hardwoods, and most of the elevated greens have moderate undulations and can be fast but true. This is a favorite for all Tour members who have played it and all the locals in the Greensboro area. |

PINEHURST'S REED WINS SENIOR AM TOUR FOXFIRE EVENT Foxfire Village, NC August 1, 2013 Arch Reed of Pinehurst captured his 2nd win of the 2013 Senior Amateur Golf Tour season, shooting a 1-under 71 on the Grey Fox Course at Foxfire Resort today. Reed was 3 shots clear of a quartet of players: Lee Allen, also from Pinehurst, Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz, Eric Ardery of Durham and Whispering Pines' Ron Hockensmith. This win, in his 11th event "on-Tour this year, will add to his 5th place position in the year-long Points Standings race. Any Tour member in any flight that finishes the year in the top 15 in their respective flight will receive an automatic invitation to the season ending National Championship played in Pinehurst. "Arch was a virtual 'lock' for a spot in that championship event even before his win today", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. There was extra excitement in the A Flight competition today as Randy Bunn of Zebulon had to go 3 extra holes of "sudden death" playoff against Wendell's Bob Dail to gain the top spot in their group. Both fired regulation scores of 76 on their initial 18 holes. As has been the case in a number of B Flight competitions lately, the only player to break 80 (and by the narrowest of margins with a 79), emerged the flight winner. Whispering Pines' Dave Niehaus needed every good shot he hit as he prevailed by a single stroke against Greensboro's Tim Ward who posted an 80. Pinehurst's Marty Carpenter enjoyed a 2-stroke margin of victory over Mike Hunter of Greensboro and Wayne Ricks, also from Pinehurst to top the C Flight. It was Carpenter's 2nd Tour win in-a-row, having won his last start at Seven Lakes Country Club in July. The next stop for the Senior Amateur Golf Tour will be Grandover Resort in Greensboro with a 10:00 am shotgun start on Thursday, August 8. There are still spots available for that event. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #211 In a stroke play event, Kubla has hit his drive into a row of bushes that runs between two adjacent holes. He finds his ball lodged in one of the bushes in an unplayable condition. He elects to take relief under R28, option c, dropping within 2 club-lengths of where his ball lies in the bush. Using his driver to measure 2 club-lengths from his ball, he inserts a tee in the ground, no closer to the hole that marks this 2 club-length distance. This tee does not quite clear the edge of the bush, but there is a slight ridge in the soil within the two club-lengths that should help deflect the ball out, away from the bush enough for a clear swing. So Kubla drops the ball with the intention of dropping between branches and striking the ridge with the dropped ball. For his first drop, the ball deflects off a branch and rolls about three club lengths away, so he needs to re-drop. On the second drop the ball lodges in the bush again, suspended about 18 inches above the ground. So he drops a third time and this time the ball hits the desired spot and rolls about three feet away from the edge of the bush but no more than two club-lengths from where his ball struck the ground. He plays this ball onto the green and makes the putt. To make sure he proceeded correctly, during the play of the next hole he checks with a Rules Official about his actions on the previous hole, accurately reviewing what happened. What is to be Kubla’s score for the hole? A. He made four. B. He made five. C. He made six. D. He made six and may be subject to a DQ.
Answer D is the most correct answer. Kubla hit the ball three times in holing out, but picked up three penalty strokes during play of the hole. His first penalty stroke was for taking the Unplayable Ball relief (R28c). In the process of his taking the two club-length relief, he first dropped the ball and it rolled more than two club-lengths from where it first struck a part of the course (the branch). On the second drop, the ball again first struck the course when it hit the bush but this time did not move more than two club-lengths and was in play. Yes, it is suspended 18 inches above the ground, but the ball is in play and Kubla must contend with the result. When he again retrieved the ball and dropped a third time, playing to the green, he ended up playing from a wrong place. As he got to play the ball from the surface rather than suspended in the bush, the Rules Official/Committee may well rule that his error was a serious breach. Since the narrative indicates he is in the middle of playing the next hole, if so ruled a serious breach, it is too late for him to correct the error and would be DQed. To the average player, having to declare a ball unplayable, which comes with a 1-stroke penalty, seems penalty enough. The feeling is the player, in burning a stroke, is entitled to a playable lie after the drop process is complete. Get that idea out of your head. Know there are no guarantees and no, you are not entitled to a better lie. So pick the best option before you begin and do things like removing loose impediments from an area in which you are to drop. It also helps if you know how to drop a ball to a spot. If you have never practiced dropping a ball on a dime-sized spot, next time you are on the range, try it. Stick a tee in the ground, then stand erect, holding a range ball at arm’s length and try to hit the tee. Think the pros don’t know how to drop to a small spot? ============================================== |

=============================================================== 4TH STRAIGHT SR TOUR WIN GOES TO ARDERY IN PLAYOFF AT GREENSBORO CC Greensboro, NC July 25, 2013 On a day where it took playoffs to determine the winner in 3 of the 4 flights contested, 111 Tour members teed it up on The Carlson Farm Course at Greensboro Country Club in Senior Amateur Golf Tour competition. Weather in the mid 70s greeted the players on an immaculate golf course. Scores proved to be as good as the conditions with three of the four flights having at least 6 players within 2 shots of the lead at the end of the day. The 4th flight had a record-tying low score posted by the winner. In Championship Flight compettiton, Durham's Eric Ardery had to go back out on the course after shooting a 1-under par 71 in regulation for a sudden death playoff against Pinehurst's Allen Lee and Cary's JohnnyAda ms. Ardery prevailed in the playoff, posting his 4th consecutive Senior Tour win in the top flight. "That's the most wins in-a-row for any flight in the 15 year history of the Senior Tour" noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Eric is definately on his game". Another player "on his game" was Yadkinville's Tom Fagerli, who tied the lowest mark ever posted in A Flight competition with a 69. Fagerli was the only flight winner to not be forced back out on the course for extra holes as his 3-under total was 4 shots clear of Lewisville's Mike Greene. While Fagerli only had to play 18 holes, 4 players had to go back out in the C Flight for bonus golf as James Eatmon of Sims prevailed over High Point's Donald Brown, Kernersville's Richard Hartley and James Tesch of Raleigh after all posted 85s on the day. In comparison, after shooting 75 on the original 18 holes, Greensboro's Tim Ward only had to beat Fayetteville's David Teal to grab his 1st place prize in B Flight competition. |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
