EAGLE WINS SENIOR TOUR PLAYOFF
Greensboro, NC
(April 9, 2015) - When a hole-in-one is only the second most
exciting thing that happens at a golf tournament, you know you're dealing with
something pretty special. That was the case during the Senior Amateur
Golf Tour's Grandover Resort event held today at the facility's West Course.
Burlington's Myron
Prevatte aced the 125 yard, par 3, fifth hole, which happened to be one of the
closest-to-pin holes in the event. Prevatte used a pitching
wedge to record his first career "ace". It was the
second hole-in-one on the Central Carolina Senior Tour this season.
While Prevatte's effort
was rare, Jim Alford of Zebulon accomplished a feat never before done in the 18
year history of the Tour. After finishing in a first place tie with
Raleigh's James Jones over 32 other Tour members competing in the A
Flight, the two players headed back out onto the course for a sudden-death
playoff. Both had posted 73 during regulation play, so it appeared that
it would take a something special to gain the top spot for the
winner. After teeing off with a 3-wood on the 300 yard, par 4 hole, Alford
simply knocked his second shot into the cup, abruptly ending the playoff and
giving him the $200 first prize for the win.
"Jim is a factor
every time he tees it up, and James has been playing great this season",
stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "But you never think a
playoff is going to be won in such a dramatic fashion".
The great play was not
confined strictly to the A Flight however. If you were going to get to
the winner's circle today you had to go really low.
In the Championship
Flight, Sanford's Craig Sturdivant posted the only sub-par round of the day
with a 2-under 70, good for a two shot edge over Howard Nemenz of
Winston-Salem. It was Sturdivant's second consecutive Tour win, having
grabbed the top spot in the season's first "Major" event held at
Bryan Park on March 26.
Sophia's Steve McSwain
also went low today in the B Flight, matching the 73 posted by A Flight winner
Alford. He enjoyed the largest margin of victory in any flight
by six strokes over Salisbury's Gary Fesperman. "Steve's done
remarkably well 'on-Tour', considering this is his rookie season", said
Hallenbeck. "He's also a great guy. I expect to see him
competing in the A Flight very soon".
Tour veteran Brian
Costine of Raleigh was king of the C Flight with an 82 - two strokes clear
of Mocksville's Mark Denton.
The next event on the
Senior Tour calendar is next week at High Point's Willow Creek Country
Club. There are a small number of openings still available for that stop.
