=============================================================== THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR BRYAN PARK (CHAMPIONS COURSE) TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT =============================================================== |
SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR STAGES 1ST MAJOR OF 2015 Browns Summit, NC March 26, 2015 Just like the PGA Tour, the Senior Amateur Golf Tour runs four "Major" events during it's season. The first of 2015 was staged recently at Bryan Park - The Championship Course. Major events are significant "on-Tour" due to the fact that participants are awarded double points in each of the four majors. These points are accumulated throughout the season and determine which Tour members will qualify for the year-ending National Championship which will be held at Hilton Head Island in November. That event draws approximately 250 players from the 13 Senior Tours spread all over the East Coast. In addition, the outright winners in each of the four flights contested today receive automatic berths to those Finals. Bruce Hallenbeck, Director for Central Carolina Tour at Bryan Park Before 1st Major of 2015 Sanford's Craig Sturdivant earned his place at Hilton Head with an even par score of 72 in the Championship Flight. He was 2 strokes clear of long-time Tour veteran Mike Smith of Lewisville who was making his Tour debut this year in the event. Another Sanford resident, Ralph Reed, also punched his ticket to the Finals in the B Flight with the only sub-80 score turned in at 79. Reed, playing in his first year "on-Tour" was 2 shots ahead of another Tour rookie, Sophia's Steve McSwain and Tour veteran Louis Herndon from Graham. The A Flight saw Yadkinville's Tom Fagerli take top honors with a 74, narrowly edging McLeansville's Ron Brady by a single stroke. Fagerli is no stranger to the winner's circle while Brady made this his 3rd consecutive top 2 finish. In C Flight action Mocksville's Mark Denton enjoyed the largest margin of victory on the day with an 84 and a 3 stroke win over a trio of golfers: Greensboro's Mike Hunter and Anselmo Arellano as well as Durham's Rick Brewer. The Senior Tour will be taking next week off for the Easter Holiday and resume play at Grandover Resort on April 9. There are still some spots available for that event. Any amateur golfer over 50 interested in playing in that event can contact Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #295 On the par five 12th hole, Bobby’s third shot was hit over the green and came to rest in the rough. At the spot where his ball has come to rest he has a large green-side fan situated between him and the hole. This particular golf course installs these air-moving fans only during the summer months, and thus have adopted the Local Rule for Temporary Immovable Obstructions (TIO) found in Appendix I. Reference the Specimen Local Rule, found in Appendix I, B, Rule 7. Decide True of False for the following: A. The only requirement to afford Bobby some relief, is that the fan must directly intervene between his ball and the hole, or be within one club-length of such interference. B. The only requirement to afford Bobby some relief, is that the fan must interfere directly with his desired line of play or be within one club-length of such interference. C. Both A and B must apply for Bobby to obtain relief under this Local Rule. D. If Bobby chooses to take relief. he is permitted to find the nearest point of relief that is no nearer the hole, that satisfies relief from the conditions as described by both A & B above, is not in a hazard nor on a putting green, and then gets one club length from that point within which he must drop the ball. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answers: Both C and D are true. If you view much professional golf on television, you actually see this Local Rule in action somewhat frequently. Unfortunately it is simply not explained very well by the analysts and commentators. Take an example where Bubba has hit his tee ball wildly off line and where it has come to rest, he now has a row of port-a-potties between him and the hole but a few yards removed from direct interfere with his stance or intended swing. When the official arrives, knowing Bubba wants relief, he’ll determine something along the lines of: if the port-a-potties were not there how would you play the ball? In order for Bubba to now get relief, he needs to indicate that there is a reasonable stroke to be made from where his ball lay, except the port-a-potties will interfere with the intended path of his shot. So, first the player must determine that, yes, the TIO lies directly between my ball and the hole, or is within one club-length of having such interference. If that is true, then he must also determine if his intended direction of play too has interference, or is within one club-length of having interference. If both are true, and there is nothing else, like a big, close in tree that would clearly make it impractical for the player to make a stroke in the intended direction, then he would be entitled to relief as detailed in D from the question. The player must not rely on an unreasonable stance or diction of play to qualify, and the TIO must also be close enough for the player to actually have practical interference. Sometimes, in lieu of the relief as in “D” above, the Committee would provide one or more Drop Zones. When multiple DZs are available, the Local Rules would govern how they are to be used in various situations. |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
