Donald Ross' historic Southern Pines Golf Club in the Sandhills of North CarolinaSouthern Pines Golf Club is similar to reading about the birthplace of golf in the Sandhills region. The course was the third ever design by Donald Ross with the first nine holes originally opening in 1906. Ross came back a few years later, re-routing a couple of holes while adding nine more.... -- Contributed by Vici J. Pate Flesher, a PGA of America Member and a Certified PGA Instructor. Golf Course Review – Southern Pines Golf ClubDoug Gelbert wrote in his book: One would like to believe that if pioneer golf course architect Donald Ross was around today, Southern Pines Golf Club is where he would be playing most of his golf. Yes, Pinehurst #2, Mid Pines and Pine Needles are his masterpieces but they are centerpieces of fancy resorts. Ross, the son of a stonemason, hailed from Dornoch, Scotland where the daily fee golfer is greeted by an unpretentious clubhouse just steps away from a world class golf experience with unrivaled routing and challenges for every club in the bag. Southern Pines is very much cut from that that mold. Ross laid out the first nine holes in 1906 with a commission from the town, his third design project in what would become a legacy of some 400 golf courses during a 48-year stay in Pinehurst. In an age when many courses were created by the local pro walking back and forth driving stakes in the turf, Ross took one of the choicest plots of golfing ground in the Sandhills and fashioned a course that flows so naturally up and down the contours that it feels as if the man uncovered a course rather than designed one. =============================================================== THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR THE MILL CREEK TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT =============================================================== |
HOMEBODY KELLY WINS SENIOR TOUR EVENT Mebane, NC May 21, 2015 Larry Kelly of Mebane served up a big helping of 'home-cooking' to his B Flight brethren in the second Major Championship of the 2015 Senior Amateur Golf Tour schedule. Mill Creek Golf Club is Kelly's home course and he took full advantage of local knowledge to post his lowest Tour round ever. His 73 gave him a comfortable 3-shot cushion over Pittsboro's Glenn Wright. Kelly, like the winner's of the other 3 flights contested today all receive automatic qualification into the year-ending National Championship event held in November at Hilton Head, SC. That event will draw over 200 participants from the 12 other Senior Amateur Tours located throughout the East Coast. In A Flight action, Sanford's Chuck Smith enjoyed an even larger margin of victory over runner-up Jim Blaylock of Winston-Salem. Smith's even-par 72 was 4 clear of Blaylock. "Both Kelly and Smith's scores were made even more impressive by the fact that it rained on and off during the event", noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. The low scoring continued in the C Flight as Durham's Rick Brewer bested 30 other flight members with an extremely low C Flight score, barely breaking 80 with a 79. Raleigh's Ed Waller was 3 back in 2nd. Eleven players broke 90 in the flight. "That's gotta be close to an all-time record", quipped Hallenbeck. Johnny Adams of Cary led the Championship Flight with a 73 from tees that were almost 400 yards longer than that of his lower flight counterparts. Joey Moffitt placed with a 78. The Senior Tour will take a week off for the Memorial Day Holiday. Play will resume on June 4 at Southern Pines Country Club. There are openings available for that event. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #303
In a stroke play event, on the par three 17th island green, which designates the entire water hazard with yellow stakes, Robbie has breached two Rules with his first stroke: first he hit his tee ball from just forward of the tee markers and the ball unfortunately went long, over the green, into the water hazard. A fellow competitor pointed out the fact that Robbie had not played from within the teeing ground. Robbie’s next stroke:
A. May be from the DZ, hitting three.
B. May be from the DZ, hitting five.
C. It Must be from the teeing ground, hitting three.
D. It Must be from the teeing ground, hitting five.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer
C. In stroke play, when starting the play of a hole, if a ball is played from outside the teeing ground, the stroke is cancelled. The player incurs a 2-stroke penalty and must correctly play a ball from within the teeing ground. Any strokes, including penalty strokes, associated with the wrongly teed ball do not count for the player’s score. R11-4b. |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
