2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR AUGUST 15, 2013 CAROLINA TRACE CC (LAKE COURSE) ----- |
Carolina Trace CC - Lake Course A Private Country Club The course architect of Carolina Trace is Robert Trent Jones Sr. and if you are a student of the game, you should know Robert Trent Jones portfolio of courses. Jones, Sr. worked with golf legend Bobby Jones on the Peachtree course in Atlanta and again on the Augusta National course, the home of the Masters. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. became a national celebrity with his complete re-design of the Oakland Hills South course for the U.S. Open Tournament in 1951. He immediately became the "Open Doctor" and in quick succession re-designed such major venues as Baltusrol-Lower course, Olympic-Lake course, Southern Hills, Oak Hill and Congressional Country Club.During his career, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed or re-designed nearly 500 courses in at least 40 states in the U.S. and 35 countries around the world. At Carolina Trace Country Club, members are fortunate to have two courses designed by such a world renowned architect. The Lake Course winds around the 315-acre Lake Trace with captivating views where maintaining focus on your game can be difficult "but fall asleep at your peril and potentially higher scores". Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Lake Course opened for play in 1971. The Lake Course winds around the 315-acre Lake Trace and was the site of the US Women's Open Sectional Qualifier in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Lake Course greens were renovated with Mini-Verde in 2011.
The Lake Course features a pair of par fives on the back nine, the 14th and 18th holes, which provide risk-reward options for charging the green in two big shots. Both the 14th and 18th holes are bordered by water on one side with an inlet of Lake Trace to traverse on the second shot. An added challenge to the 18th hole is the 80-foot drop in elevation over its 507-yard layout from the back tees. Sign-up and prepare to have some fun. WENDELL'S DAIL SETS SENIOR TOUR SCORING RECORD Greensboro, NC August 8, 2013 Bob Dail from Wendell started out on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour as a B Flight player. Through the years his improved play moved him to the A Flight where he has been regularly competitive in recent seasons. Despite his solid play "on-Tour", nobody expected the result he turned in today at Grandover Resort's West Course - a Tour record low score for the A Flight with a 68. "That's my best score ever", stated Dail. "Not just 'on-Tour', but anywhere. I hit it where I aimed. I only missed two fairways and two greens, got four birdies and didn't have a single bogey. It was nice, 'cause the guys in my group were cheering me on". "Sometimes nice guys do finish first", quipped Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Bob's been with us for awhile and everyone enjoys playing with him. He had to play well today, because Zebulon's Jim Alford posted one of the lowest A Flight scores of the season as well with a 71". Meanwhile in the Championship Flight, which played from tees more than 300 yards longer than the other 3 flights, Pinehurst's Arch Reed won his 3rd event of the year and second in-a-row, posting a 74 and beating fellow Pinehurst resident Rick Luzar by a single stroke. "Arch won last week at Foxfire. I think he's getting the hang of this", said Hallenbeck. Low scores continued in the B Flight as Lumberton's Cliff Nance shot 75 to edge Durham's Jerry Widdowson by one shot. Only 4 players managed to break 80 in the B Flight field of 24. Nine players were able to break 90 in the C Flight which had 38 participants, led by the 86 posted by Hillsborough's Barry Barbour. Three players were 1 stroke behind Barbour - Mike Robinson of Greensboro, Reidsville's Kenneth Moore and James Eatmon from Sims. The next stop on the Senior Amateur Tour is Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford - The Lake Course. There are spots available for that event. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #210 Tom’s ball on the green is marked with a medium sized coin. Bob, who is to putt first, uses his putter to press down Tom’s coin. Decide which of the following statements are true: 1. If Tom and Bob are opponents in match and if Bob is acting without Tom’s authority there is no penalty unless the coin is moved when pressed down. 2. If Tom and Bob are opponents in a match and if Bob is acting with Tom’s authority there is no penalty to either player even if the coin is moved when pressed down provided it is replaced on the correct spot. 3. If Tom and Bob are fellow competitors, whether or not Bob has Tom’s permission, if the coin is moved when pressed down there is no penalty to either player provided the coin is replaced on the correct spot. 4. If Tom and Bob are partners, if the coin is moved when pressed down, Tom is penalized one stroke and the coin must be replaced on the correct spot.
Answers 1 is True 2 is True 3 is True 4 is True Obviously, the relationship of the two players involved matters as does whether or not the coin is moved when pressed: - If the players involved are opponents, and the coin when pressed does not move, there is no penalty whether or not the opponent had the player’s permission.
- If the players involved are opponents, and the opponent is proceeding with the permission of the player, there is no penalty if the coin is moved, provided it is replaced.
- If the players involved are opponents, and the opponent is proceeding without the permission of the player, and if the coin moves when pressed, the opponent is penalized one stroke and the coin must be replaced.
- If the players involved are fellow competitors, there is no penalty whether or not permission is granted or whether or not the coin is moved. If moved, it must be replaced.
- If the players are partners, permission is not needed. If the coin is moved, the partner (whose coin is moved) is penalized one stroke and the coin must be replaced.
Any failure to replace the coin on the proper spot could cause the player whose ball is marked, to play from a wrong place—Loss of hole in Match Play, 2-stroke Penalty in Stroke Play. The Rules do not state who may or must replace a moved marker, only that the result must accurately mark the position for the ball. =============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
