ALFORD ACES NEW CAROLINA TRACE COURSE
Sanford, NC (October 1, 2015) - Carolina Trace
Country Club spent $1.8 million dollars renovating their Lake Course this past
year, turning a first rate course into a premium golf venue. In it's
second day of operation under the new renovations they hosted the Senior
Amateur Golf Tour as their first "outside" outing. Zebulon's
Gus Alford took this opportunity to "christen" the new layout with
it's first hole-in-one.
Standing on the 150 yard 8th hole (his first hole of the
competition due to the shotgun start) Alford hit his 7-iron, had it hit 3 feet
in front of the hole, bounce past, and draw back directly into the hole.
Player partner Ricky Lugar commented " It was right on the stick the whole
way. I knew it would be close, but I didn't know it was gonna go
in!"
After the round, in which Alford finished tied for
4th place, the course graciously presented Alford with a
"pin-flag" signed by the course architect, Director of Golf, the
Course Superintendent, and the Senior Tour Director.
The Alford's were not through for the day however, as Gus' brother
Jim, also from Zebulon, took home first place laurels in the A Flight with a
74. Jim narrowly missed equaling the mark of the Championship Flight's
leader, Joey Moffitt of High Point who posted a 73.
Steve Denton of Wedell birdied the 2nd hole of his playoff with
Tour veteran Darrell Hagwood of Raleigh to grab the B Flight crown, while
Pittsboro's Jim Prouty was the only C Flight member to break 90 with his 89 for
the top spot.
"This was another well-run event hosted by the Carolina Trace
staff", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "As we have for
many years, we'll be excited to come back in 2016".
The Carolina Trace event was the regular season finale for the
Senior Amateur Tour. Next event for them will be the National Finals to
be held in Hilton Head next month.
