Results from Colonial Country Club
Thursday
August 25th was the site for The Central Carolina Senior Amateur Golf Tour
tournament at the Colonial CC in Thomasville. The warm weather was
perfect and the course conditions were even better at this incredible golf
course.
In
the Champ flight, the trend was set for the day as a playoff was required to
determine the winner. One of the four out of the five flights. Trent Gregory
and Chris Wilkes were tied after regulation play with scores of 77 and returned
to the first tee for the sudden victory playoff. The sudden victory came for
Trent on the first hole as his par putt wasn’t matched by Chris. John East
finished in third place posting 79.
The
A flight was not to outdone in the playoff department as FOUR players all
turned in their scorecards with scores of 75. So Howard Nemenz, Ken Eichele,
Mark Cousar from the Charlotte Tour, and Jamie Branham all made their way to
the first tee for another sudden victory playoff. After one hole no one was
able to break out from the pack. But lightning struck on the second hole as
Howard drained a birdie putt earning the win to make it two wins in a row. Ron
Brady narrowly missed the playoff carding 76 as he finished in fifth.
In
the B flight, yes you guessed it, another playoff went off the first tee
because Mike Wallace and Peter Martin from the Charlotte Tour matched
scorecards with 79’s. Mike thought he had finished second, so he had to go get
his clubs and throw on his shoes from his trunk. Apparently he was already in
go home mode so he decided to end the playoff on the first which he did by
rolling in a six foot par putt that Peter was unable to cover. In third place
James Demyan shot 80, while Mike Turbeville posted an 81 taking fourth. Bernie
Loehr and Rob Andrews both shot 84 in the T5 finish.
The
last of the playoffs was courtesy of the C flight as James McPherson and Ed
McNally shot 84’s, with James making a nerve racking four foot par putt to tie
Ed on their last hole. On the first sudden victory playoff hole both players
hit the green, but James stayed 15 feet below the hole on the sloping green
whereas Ed flew it beyond the flag and his ball came to rest on the back fringe
leaving a fast treacherous downhill putt. Unfortunately for Ed gravity took
control of his first putt as it rolled past the hole and left him a testy putt
coming back. He got it close. Then it was James turn. He calmly lagged his putt
to 18 inches and knocked it in for the win. Patrick Warren placed third with
his score of 89, while Jim Chapman from the Charlotte Tour shot 90 in fourth
place. Tom Kubla rounded out the top five with a round of 93.
In
the D flight, Kelly Brown posted an excellent score of 84 to take the five
stroke victory. Brothers Bob Dreelin from the Southeast VA Tour and Dennis
Dreelin from the Atlanta Tour carded matching 89’s in the T2 finish. Mark Dyvig
from the Charlotte Tour posted a score of 90 to place fourth. Meanwhile, Don
Michaux shot 91 to round out the top five.
After
a week off from Tour competition for Labor Day, the Central Carolina Tour moves
